YOUTH SETS THE TONE
If they have their way, Raphael and David will be leading the Bundesmusikkapelle Steinberg am Rofan in the not too distant future. At least on the tenor horn. At the moment, however, the two eight-year-olds are still at the very beginning of their careers. They have been taking lessons every week at the music school in Jenbach since last autumn. David wants to join his local band later, “because it sounds good and it’s reassuring when everyone plays in time”. At the age of ten, Selina is already a little closer to this goal. She is already in her fifth year of playing the flute: “I started when I was six. There was an event at school where we were shown all the instruments. That’s when I was most attracted to the flute. Young musicians are particularly important for small towns like Steinberg. Out of a population of around 300, 30 are involved in music. Seven budding musicians are currently in training.
The Bundesmusikkapelle Achenkirch currently consists of 54 active musicians and three sutlers. Twenty-nine of them are under the age of 30. In addition to the active musicians, eight children and young people are currently being trained on various instruments at the music school in Jenbach-Achental. Eben is currently the only youth brass band on the Achensee. With 40 members, it is also the largest in the entire district of Schwaz. The musicians are aged between nine and 26 and are led by Hannah Prantl. The 22-year-old rehearses two to three times a year with the youth orchestra. The Youth Orchestra and the Bundesmusikkapelle Eben are not worried about the future of their young musicians. “We are lucky that we have a brass class at the primary school. This means that the children there play in an ensemble from the very first note. I then invite them to play in the youth orchestra,” says Prantl. From there, most of them eventually join the Bundesmusikkapelle Eben, which currently has 64 active members. In the meantime, the BMK Wiesing has forged a partnership with the neighbouring community of Stans. Chairman Michael Amplatz: “We joined forces because we didn’t have enough young people for our own orchestra. The result is a joint youth brass band called “Wiesta”.
