The Achensee is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. When the water glistens in the sunlight and colourful sails dance across the surface, you’ll want to get active yourself. Sailing, surfing, kiteboarding, diving or pedal boating - almost any sport can be practised here. The following two examples show what is possible on and in the “Tyrolean Fjord”. The foiler

If you see someone on a surfboard on the Achensee, hovering barely a metre above the water, chances are it is Daniel Riegler. The 31-yearold is a windsurfing foiler. Riegler has always been an enthusiastic surfer, but the wind conditions at the Achensee are not always easy: “With the normal equipment I didn’t get much done because the wind was often too weak. But with the foil, the number of days has practically doubled”. The foil is a kind of small “plane” that is attached to a rod just under a metre long underneath the board. Even at relatively low speeds, it becomes buoyant and the board rises out of the water with the surfer: “You reach speeds of up to 60 km/h and are constantly in the air. It is quite fascinating.”

The kayaker

Kayaking can be a lot calmer. But it doesn’t have to be, as the members of Tyrol’s only flat-water kayak club at the Achensee demonstrate. Stefan Anfang got into kayaking through his children. Instead of playing taxi, he himself got into one of the plastic shells and was hooked: “Once you’re in it, you stay in it”. What started as a private passion became an association in 2016, which now has 156 members. If you want to paddle across the lake on your own, you must join the club. According to Anfang, the feeling of euphoria you get from kayaking is guaranteed: “It’s total deceleration. You see the landscape, nature, not from the shore, but from a completely different perspective.”
