MARIJUANA AND AMERICA CLIENT: Marijuana and America CREATIVE DIRECTION/LAYOUT/DESIGN: Anton Murray Marijuana and America is a local newspaper that asked to have a spread designed about the epidemic of marijuana in the United States. The design of the United States being covered in marijuana buds was design by me. I chose to represent the country in this way to reinforce the idea of the struggle in America to decide whether or not it should be legal to grow marijuana for personal use. There is also a poll, surveying 1,000,000 Americans, on the right side of the poster that indicates their opinion on how they feel and/or if it should in fact be legalized.

NATIONAL START! WALKING DAY CLIENT: Department of Recreation and Wellness CREATIVE DIRECTION/LAYOUT/DESIGN/ILLUSTRATION: Anton Murray The Recreation and Wellness Department wanted to motivate individuals to lead a healthy lifestyle. They wanted to strongly encourage individuals that walking is a healthy alternative to exercise. When thinking of promoting walking, the first thing that comes to mind is the kind of footwear that will be on your feet. Whether you are walking to class or to the store, most people wear shoes to get around. With that mindset, I illustrated a pair of colofrful, vibrant walking shoes with a 1960’s feel and to make the shoes grab the viewers attention.

THE BREW It’s getting hot outside. For fans of the malt, this means one important thing – summer beers! There are a dizzying number of seasonal brews available. To get you started, we’ve broken down six of the most popular ones. Cheers!

Blue Moon Honey Moon

Miller Chill

Blue Moon has managed to craft a beer that packs a significant alcoholic punch, but lacks any discernable bite. Sweet orange peel combines with clove honey and a hint of hoppiness to make a beer that is without parallel in smoothness. The honey taste is readily apparent, even in the finish. Honey Moon’s texture is almost buttery, lingering on the tongue for a moment after drinking. Light and refreshing, it’s a different taste for summer.

There’s something a little disturbing about a salty beer. Sure, we all like to eat salty snacks with our brew, but salt in the beer? The Miller Brewing Co. has put considerable effort into marketing this “chelada” style lager, but flashy stands in the grocery store don’t always translate into quality beer. Like its rival BL Lime, Chill has a heavy dose of lime flavor, but it lacks the smoothness of its cousin. It’s difficult to get past the salt. One pull of this will have the corners of your mouth sagging in disgust. Try again, Miller.

Pair with: Something light – chicken, fish, and vegetables.

Bud Light Lime What could taste more like summer? At first sip, Bud Light Lime conjures images of poolside barbeques and long days on the beach. Barely noticeable hops combine with strong lime flavor that leaves a lingering finish. A slightly yeasty aftertaste serves as the only reminder you’re drinking beer. But what makes BL Lime so quintessentially “summer?” Is it the not-so-subtle lime flavor? Is it the ease with which even non-beer drinkers can guzzle it on a hot day? Does it even matter? Purists may scoff and call it a mass market abomination, but most will just call it delicious.

Pair with: A hot summer day.

Leinenkugel Summer Shandy What do you get when you combine a wheat beer and lemonade? Leinenkugel apparently decided to find out and created this hybrid. Although it looks like a beer, Summer Shandy is dominated by a very sweet lemony taste. One could argue that it’s not really a beer at all. The wheat flavor of the malt is present, but takes a back seat. It’s easy to drink, but a departure from the strong beers Leinenkugel normally produces. Beer geeks will not approve.

Pair with: Masochism.

Sam Adams Summer Ale Sam Adams seasonal beers offer beer drinkers year-round variety with a different specialty brew each season. Sam’s Summer Ale is dominated by the sweet orange peel it’s brewed with. Few other flavors are discernable, apart from the modest bitterness injected by the hops. This one has a distinct alcoholic bite to it as well, a welcome contrast to the sweetness. A wellrounded, thoughtfully crafted beer.

Pair with: Something spicy.

Sierra Nevada Summerfest Brewed in the German and Czech tradition, this one is dominated by hops and powerful light grain flavor. Sierra Nevada may have gone too far though. Hops are intended to temper the sweetness of the malt, not destroy it. The grain flavor has barely any time to touch the taste buds before the drinker is kicked in the teeth by the hops. Disappointing, especially considering this style of lager is potentially delicious.

Pair with: Full-flavored food that’s heavy on the garlic.

= Nasty! Pair with: Dessert.

= I’d try it again.

= Pretty good

= Amazing!

ANTON MURRAY DESIGN BOOK: THE BREW MENU : 06

THE BREW MENU CLIENT: The Mace and Crown CREATIVE DIRECTION/LAYOUT/DESIGN: Anton Murray The Brew is a menu designed for the sole purpose to display the opinion of Josh McDonald, the Entertainment Editor for the Mace and Crown. The beers chosen for the menu are based off of Josh’s take on how good he feels the beer is along with which food choice he feels best would go along with it. There is also a rating system, indicated by a beer bottle silhouette, used to give the viewer an idea of whether or not the beer is worth of money or to be kept on the shelf.

STUDENT RECREATION CENTER ONE YEAR CELEBRATION CLIENT: Department of Recreation and Wellness CREATIVE DIRECTION: Anton Murray The Department of Recreation and Wellness wanted to create a poster that brought together the idea of the different activities offered throughout the building. The celebration, held on March 2 at the Student Recreation Center, provided different activities, including: fitness classes, swimming pool preview, table tennis tournament and a kayaking event(Outdoor Adventure Program). Placing a variety of photographs within the “1” provides the viewer with a clear view of what the Student Recreation Center has to offer to the students, faculty/staff and outside members.

This week in Black History Month Black History Month began as “Negro History Week” in 1926, created by Carter G. Woodson. It changed to a month-long celebration in 1976, February being chosen to commemorate the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, according to history.com. To help celebrate Black History Month this year, each week in February the Mace & Crown will feature a “This week in black history” section.

THIS WEEK IN BLACK HISTORY MONTH CLIENT: The Mace and Crown CREATIVE DIRECTION/LAYOUT/DESIGN: Anton Murray The Mace and Crown, Old Dominion University’s weekly newspaper, requested a poster that incorporated different events during the weeks of Black History Month. During each week, every day had something special happen by an African-American individual that changed history. Creating a peice that was easy to view and understand was the key. I chose a railroad background to push the idea of the hardship that the African-Americans from the 1800’s faced during the Underground Railroad time.

Cobain formed Nirvana in 1987 with Krist Novoselic. Within two years, the band became a fixture of the burgeoning Seattle grunge scene. In 1991, the arrival of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” marked the beginning of a dramatic shift of popular rock music away from the dominant genres of the 1980s (glam metal, arena rock, and dance-pop) and toward grunge and alternative rock.

Nirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, with the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990.

With the lead single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from their 1991 album Nevermind, Nirvana entered into the mainstream, bringing along with them a subgenre of alternative rock called grunge. Other Seattle grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden also gained popularity, and, as a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the United States during the early-to-middle 1990s.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF KURT COBAIN CLIENT: Nirvana CREATIVE DIRECTION/LAYOUT/ILLUSTRATION: Anton Murray Kurt Cobain, the former lead singer of the ‘90s rock band, Nirvana, was an American singer-songwriter and musician. Throughout his time with Nirvana, Kurt was known by many for his down-to-earth lyrics and rhymes that caught the eye of many. Little did many people know that, Cobain struggled with a heroin addiction that would soon end his life. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle, the victim of what was officially ruled a suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. The different pages tell a story of the artist, Cobain, from the beginning of his career to his death.

Third Eye Blind, a San-Francisco based alternative rock group has been playing hits since the mid90’s. Known for one of their most popular track of the ‘90s, “Semi-Charmed Life”, Third Eye Blind comes out with another album to not be forgetten, Ursa Major, released in 2009. The majority of the album was recorded overseas in Europe. When thinking of how to design a look that fit the European setting, creating an eye-catching cover first came to mind. Pushing the idea that Third Eye Blind is blasting back into the scene was my goal to make the album cover stand out from the rest.

ANOTHER NOTION OF TIMELESS OFFENSIVE NOTES BOOK CLIENT: N/A CREATIVE DIRECTION/DESIGNER: Anton Murray Another Notion of Timeless Offensive Notes is a collection of twenty(20) poems written and edited by Anton Murray. The poems used in the book were carefully chosen and all have special meaning. The colors used on the cover of the book correlate to the sections within the book. There is a window that conceals a picture(see left) that engages the viewer to look behind the page to view the full image. I chose to construct the book in such a way to challenge myself and make the book not only visually interesting but engaging at the same time.

“This book left me speechless. Definitely one of the best novels written by H.G. Wells.” -T. Howard

H.G. WELLS

“One of the best books I have read. Novelist H.G. Wells does it again! His imagination and plot for “War of the Worls” is beyond compare.” -F. Townsend

WAR OF THE WORLDS WAR OF THE WORLDS

The War of the Worlds (1898) is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. It describes the experiences of a character who travels through London as the Earth is invaded by Martians. It is said to be the first story that details a conflict between mankind and an alien race. The War of the Worlds is split into two parts : Book one: The Coming of the Martians and Book two: The Earth under the Martians. The novel is narrated by an unnamed writer of scientific articles. Throughout the narrative he struggles to reunite with his wife, while witnessing the Martians rampaging through the southern English counties. Part one also features the tale of his brother, who accompanies two women to the coast in the hope of escaping England as it is invaded by machines operated by aliens.

HITTING THE BULLSEYE

There is no better feeling than to hit the bullseye. Sharp shooting is mandatory for all police officers on the ODU Police Department staff. They strive to be their best. Pictured are two police officers at the shooting range pointing at their targets after both hitting a bullseye.

ODU Police officer, Sgt. Huckless helping the elementary schoolers at Larchmont Elementary, located off of Hampton Boulevard.

Police and Pupils Supporting the community is also something that officers show pride in. Starting at a young age, children in the Norfolk area feels safe being helped with their work. At Larchmont Elementary, there are many playgrounds and areas for the children to play and know that they are safe.

OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENT YEARBOOK CLIENT: Old Dominion University Police Department CREATIVE DIRECTION/LAYOUT: Anton Murray The Old Dominion University Police Department asked me to design a layout of different images taken of the officers amongst the department. They also did not want to use many words, as they feared the viewer would be less interested in the yearbook. With that in mind, I chose to have brief descriptions of what was happening in the different spreads to help the viewer understand the significance of the images. Each layout is different and has elements that keep the viewer(s) engaged by telling a story with the least amount of text as possible.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY CLIENT: National Science Foundation CREATIVE DIRECTION: Anton Murray Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an American holiday celebrated in the month of January each year. The significance of his leadership and will power to lead a nation to believe that there would one day be equality for all, brought him to the forefront of a divided nation. The “I Have a Dream” speech is known nation-wide by many leaders and is still seen as one of the most influential speakers in the history of the United States. In thinking of a way to reinforce the idea of the powerful activist of the 1960’s, I chose to use a portion of his “I Have a Dream” speech on the back of the brochure.

The equality of all sports was key in this design. The shirts were to be handed out and worn by all intramural athletes for their respective sports. The shirts were printed in small, medium, large, extra-large and double XL.

ANTON MURRAY DESIGN BOOK: LETTER OF INTENT : 44

George Mason University Graduate Administration: I am pursuing my studies as a senior at Old Dominion University, majoring in Graphic Design. I am writing this letter to express my interest in your Graduate School of Art, Master of Arts (MA) program. My academic record is highly competitive, along with significant achievements in community service and sportsmanship. I am confident that I will be an asset to the university. I am interested in the program because of the cutting edge research and experience I would receive at your institution. I have some excellent professor mentors at George Mason University and would be honored to join your institution, which has been at the forefront of education for such a long time. My academic background in design started at a young age. In high school, I took many classes involving architecture and engineering. Being fluent in programs like AutoCAD and doing mechanical drawing also inspired me to want to work in a field of design. Upon graduation from high school, I had a strong passion for the arts. Once I was accepted to Old Dominion University, I took some time to explore different options based on what I did during grade school. Through some trial and error, I decided that Graphic Design would be the most suitable major. I knew that design would be enjoyable and I would get the best education possible with the help of the professors and peers. On a daily basis, I closely analyze and read newspapers, magazines, billboards, album covers and professional books to obtain a better understanding of design from a perspective that is not my own. Design has become a major aspect of my life since joining the Graphic Design program at Old Dominion University. Throughout my tenure as a graphic design student, I have been fortunate to be heavily involved in the campus, as well as obtaining my goal to become a graphic designer of Old Dominion. While attending Old Dominion University, I have had various opportunities to utilize the skills I learned in the classroom to design an array of design work, from brochures to newspapers. I also was fortunate to be the lead Art & Design Director for the university newspaper, The Mace and Crown, and a Graphic Designer at the Old Dominion University Recreation and Wellness Department. As the Art & Design Director of our university newspaper, I am responsible for ensuring the content is correct and layout is completed within strict deadlines. Also, I supervise three assistants whom I mentor and allow to be creative with the newspaper, while following the limitations of formatting and the style of the paper. Being able to see the graphic design assistants grow and become more familiar and comfortable with the programs being used is a very gratifying feeling as the Art and Design Director. I also work with the Old Dominion University Recreation and Wellness Department as a Graphic Designer and Webmaster. I work closely with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Membership to create various collateral for the department. I am responsible for developing flyers and banners for the website and print that are used to promote the health and wellness of the students, faculty/staff and others that use our facilities. I want to pursue an MA in Graphic Design at George Mason University because I am not only interested in design, I am open to receiving and giving ideas from other individuals to get a better understanding of how they perceive my work and what I can do to become a better designer. I understand that taking the ideas and opinions of others is not always best, but having the feedback is a great way to see how the audience views my work, whether it is positive or negative. Design is objective. When designing any type of print medium, I was told that concept is most important. Execution is a major role that is to be taken into consideration as well. When applying that ideology to my personal life in the design world I carefully and meticulously plan how I would like to approach the idea. There are many ways to approach any concept; therefore, I create various ways to handle the project at hand. From conception to construction, I try to evoke feeling and emotion into the piece because every project has a special meaning to me. Lastly, I feel that design is a very powerful medium in the world. Although many people don’t realize it, art is everywhere. The most important thing I have learned throughout my higher education is that designers have to understand and be weary of the choices they make when designing. I feel that if I am accepted into the MA program in Graphic Design at George Mason, I will bring forth new ideas, a positive attitude and an open mind, which will help benefit not only the program but myself as well. I would like to discuss more about this program with you. My phone number is 703-599-7958, and my email address is amurr007@odu.edu. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Anton Murray
