Kelly gang steal victory in beachside rumble Byron 2 Bruns fun

After consecutive losses, both Byron Bay and Mullumbimby were desperate for the two NRRRL competition points on offer at Red Devil Park on Sunday. Coach and lock-forward Simon Kelly steered Byron home by 25-14, but the score was no indicator of the tightness of the contest. The first forty minutes had the typical dourness of a local derby, with hooker Eli ‘the Hobbit’ Colby barging over from dummy half to put the Devils in front after twenty-five minutes, a lead they extended to 8-0 when Sam Barnes was

decked and Matt Connor converted the ensuing penalty. Tension mounted as chances went begging at either end, bringing into raucous play the opposing factions on the terraces – it was the Capulets and Montagues all over again, only with no love flowering on the turf. And the inevitable came to pass. Giant’s winger Joel Christie found Duane ‘Caligula’ Cahill’s shiny skull an irresistible target for his fist, their skirmish prompting an all-in that allowed everyone to vent their spleen. ‘He’s a repeat offender, give
him half an hour!’ the Old Bloke advised, acting as honorary QC, but the ref saw fit to send Christie to the bin for ten, along with the Bay’s Jonathan Cox and Chris Coleman. Down to eleven against twelve, the Devils were unable to prevent the fired up Giants from clawing their way back to 8-all after a Matt Mulcahy try and goals to Chase Nelson. A punishing second half saw Brad Lees cross to put Byron ahead, only for the scores to be locked again when Grant Cook burrowed through from dummy half. With the clock ticking down, Barnes coolly slotted a field goal

for the Devils, but the eight minutes remaining were always going to be too many to maintain the skinny lead it provided. Captain and will o’ the wisp centre Clarence Kelly, shut down for most of the day by rigorous marking, was primed for an explosive contribution. When Mullum botched a scrum move he swooped on the loose ball to sprint sixty metres to the line, but the missed conversion attempt meant that Byron’s 19-14 lead was not unassailable – especially against never-say-die Mullum. But one last twist awaited. The Giants’ kicking game had been the more effective throughout, so it was ironic that a Byron up-and-under should bury the visitors in the extraordinary finale. From his own half, with speculation rather than design, the Devils’ Connor hoiked it high. The ball landed precisely where none of three defenders could quite get it on the full. Storming through like a towtruck on its way to a prang, Leon Kelly got the bounce of a lifetime and, to the delirious delight of the red crowd on the western slope and the funereal silence of the mob on the eastern, the winger raced forty metres untouched to the goalposts. It was a coup de grace delivered at thrilling speed. The Giants and their supporters, still living in hope, would have been gutted but, as they say in the classics, geez it was grouse.

You couldn’t have pre-ordered a better day for the Byron to Bruns Run than the one that was had on Sunday. Clear skies, low tide, hard sand, gentle breeze: perfect. Forty runners set out from Belongil Beach at 8am and the first competitor, Mullumbimby’s Scott Sewell, arrived at Bruns 36 minutes 58 seconds later. Though the day was gorgeous, runners still put in a massive effort to record times that will be hard to beat next year. The winners of the divisions were: First male, Scott Sewell, 36:58, Scott also won the 35+ division. First female, Ela
Heinger 44:43, Ela also won the under 14 female division. The 65+ male winner was Adrian Dangerfield in 53:06 and the 55+ male was Paul Dixon who ran 43:03. The 55+ female was Maree Wheelin with 53:42 and the 45+ male was Peter Jarvis, 44:36. The 45+ female winner was Natalie Carter in 54:00 and the Open male was John Furber running 41:05 and the Open female was Tara Douglas who ran 47:18. In the junior section the under 15 male was Asher Douglas coming home is 52:27 and the under 12 male was Gabe Douglas who ran 52:34.
Maggies win in Nimbin The Maggies travelled to Nimbin on the weekend, it was a great experience in country football for new players. With several players rested due to injuries Hungry and Ron Jeremy had to pull on the boots to give us 16. It was a scrappy game with Byron running out 167 to 76 winners. Show me the money Johnnie was trying to impress Coolangatta scouts with plenty of running, sadly he didn’t end up with a contract. Joey and Sammie out of the centre created opportunities and goals and kicked eight between them. Adam was providing a good
link on the forward line with Ron who kicked four in his comeback game and showed he liked playing around the flanks. Dom rucked and tackled hard all day. Sticky was moved to the backline with his superglue hands and took some great grabs.Nic had a good second half and created many opportunities down ground. It was a win but with the season nearing halfway Byron will need to improve to beat Ballina at home next week to stay in the topfpur. New players and enquiries ring Mick 0432 401 334.
