Bruns kids produce and star in TV ad Brunswick Heads Public School students from levels five and six are writing, producing, directing, performing in and assisting with the editing of their own 30 second commercial, set to air on Prime TV later this year. The project came about because Brunswick Heads Chamber of Commerce won $5,000 worth of Prime TV advertising time last year when they received a Regional Achievement Award acknowledging them as the best chamber of commerce in NSW. ‘We wanted to use the prize to do something positive for the community, so we approached the primary school with this exciting project for our local kids to work on that would highlight all the really great things there are to do here in Brunswick Heads,’ said Simple Pleasures 2010 project coordinator Kim Rosen. The students were given a brief to produce their ad around the Simple Pleasures brand. Lanie Loughlin, who is coordinating ‘The Young Bruns’ project with Kim Rosen, said that one of the most exciting

aspects of the project was the students’ exposure to a pool of highly skilled and experienced TV industry professionals. So far, the list of local industry professionals volunteering their expertise includes artistic director Alan Morden, TV executive producer Valerie Hardy, international documentary

distributor Jenny Cornish, video camera tutor Jenny Garrett, Prime TV stringer Bob Easterbrook, owner of Elite Edge Media Grant Fowler, and local musician Ilona Harker. ‘Not many kids get the opportunity to work with industry professionals like this, supported by their school, and

showcase their talents,’ said Lanie. ‘They are being inspired by this program and in turn are coming up with some really inspiring ideas – we can’t wait to see the final cut.’ A launch/public screening of the students’ work will be held before the commercial airs later in the year.

Story & photo Eve Jeffery

A gift from a Vietnam veteran set Martin Johnston on a photographic path many years ago when he was only 14. Martin was living with his family in Ocean Shores and spent a lot of time with his next door neighbour Roger Shaeffer. ‘Roger was an artist and a photographer and he showed me a lot of his work. He bought a Canon TF when he was a solider in Vietnam.’ Martin says that when Roger died about nine years ago from cancer he got from exposure to Agent Orange, his wife Kate gave the camera to Martin to start his own adventure, and adventure he did. Moving into the digital world

two years ago, Martin travelled the world for 11 months with his digital companion, a Nikon D80. He had planned to visit San Francisco, New York City, London and New Delhi. His trip covered a lot more ground as he met people along the way

who he would join for jaunts to other places like Spain and Morocco. Martin says he also got sidetracked in Croatia. ‘I fell in love with the islands there. It is a war-torn country that in the last ten years has completely

turned itself around and created such a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.’ On his return to Australia, Martin self-published a book, Around the World, with a selection of his images. ‘The idea came to me when I was staying with Leah Henry, a local girl who now dances in the Moulin Rouge. I had no idea what I was doing at first, but after a little advice from Print Rescue in Brunswick Heads, I was on my way.’ Martin says the response has been overwhelmingly positive from cafe owners, galleries, gift shops and also online. Around The World is on sale at Art Piece Gallery in Mullumbimby for $25, and on www.saycheesefotos.blogspot.com.
