The lights are on and Shores United are home Still a matter of controversy, the lights at the sports fields in New Brighton were finally switched on last Friday night as the Shores United under 14s played their inaugural night game on the Tom Kendall oval. In a shire that officially opens an envelope, the field lit up with no fanfare and local kids took to the grass to get the soccer season underway. Shores United president Marc Patten says that the club has had to fight tooth and nail to get the lights, and now that they have them, they are to be used with restrictions. ‘After years of lobbying, delays, surveys, environmental studies and more studies, the lights have been installed at Tom Kendall oval,’ says Marc. ‘We were supposed to be consulted about usage but instead we have been dictated to and told that for the time being, the lights can only be turned on from May to September and even then, for only three days a week.’ Many at the club feel that this is yet one more disadvantage to the north of the shire as no other sports field in the area has to adhere to such stringent timetabling on lighting hours. ‘The people of Ocean shores have seen countless studies and ‘work shops’ but decades on – nothing,’ says Marc. ‘Like our third world roads, street lighting and absent foot paths, the small undersized field at New Brighton has no dressing rooms, no showers, no seating, no parking and remains our

Sportsfields at Byron Bay, Bangalow, Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby all have multiple fields, lights, sheds, change rooms, showers and seating.’ Mr Patten feels that it is more of a social issue than environ-
mental and that it is just a few residents who are complaining about the lights. ‘I have been informed that a handful of people, perhaps less than ten, don’t want lights at the oval. Some of them are local residents, some are well connected individuals who don’t even live here full time,’ he said. Byron Shire Council’s execu-

tive manager of community infrastructure Phil Holloway said the lights at Tom Kendall Field can be used Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings until 8.30pm. ‘The usage of the lights is in response to the Review of Environment Factors (REF) report which is a required under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act,’ he said. ‘The REF considers social and environmental issues that are specific to a project site and how they can be minimised.’ Mr Holloway said under the Tom Kendall Field management plan, the lights will also be monitored for the next couple of months to record any impacts to the area. ‘The findings will be reported to Council later in the year for discussion. The report will also include options on future light usage for sporting groups.’ Mr Patten would like to see the New Brighton facility come into line with other sporting venues in the shire.’ We have 12 teams, 160 kids, and hundreds supporters at New Brighton, not to mention an overwhelming majority of support from the people of Ocean Shores. This is not the end of the battle. We will keep fighting these ridiculous restrictions and constant hurdles, until the people of Ocean Shores finally get some respect.’ For a bunch of kids the only important outcome on Friday was the result of their game. Shores United drew their game against Bangalow two all. TABLE TENNIS Mullumbimby 29/4 Singles Open C’ship: P Saro; r/up M Smith. Doubles: C Strybos/M Smith 2 d P Sultas/P Saro 0. Rugby Roundup Bangalow Vs Shiners The Mullum Moonshiners hosted Bangalow on Saturday in the bottom of the table clash. Both teams were looking for their first win. The game started with Mullum gaining the advantage on the back of poor Bangalow discipline. Eventually Bangalow forwards started to get on top – Mullum defended gallantly but the pressure was too much with outside centre Welshman Griff and dynamic new backrow recruit Dougie muscling up to crash over for a try each in the first half. The momentum continued in the second half with flanker Simon Leighton and fullback Nick Horney scoring tries to secure an important bonus point victory 24-0. Bangalow forwards did the job winning the contests. After losing eight players from their squad and six from last year’s starting grand final team, five time premiers Bangalow are rebuilding but the signs are promising.
Byron Bay Vs Yamba In what was expected to be the match of the round Byron Bay and Yamba took each other on at the Byron Rec fields. With both teams possessing agile back lines and forward packs that were not adverse tochancing their arm in broken play, the game was high paced from start to finish. Yamba saw the majority of possession in the first twenty minutes, yet they were thwarted by stoic defence from the home side. A mistake from Byron saw a well executed Yamba counter-attack, which resulted in a 7-0 lead to the visitors. Byron managed one penalty from 2 attempts later in the first half, to trail 7-3 at oranges. The mad pace of the game continued in the second half, with the tempo taking its toll on all players, Byron running four different centre combinations as each back retired to the side lines to fix his hair. Both sides continued to play an open style of game, but it was Yamba’s advantage at the Lockrey/Shelly Clark; Ct 6 Gladiators v Dragonflies ump Eliza Salvatori/Leah Thomas; 1.45 pm: Canteen Classics; Ct1 Drop Bears v Taverners ump Sue H/ Waves; Ct 2 Dunno v Bellas ump Blaze/ Giants; Ct 4 Blueberries v Y Not ump Boosh/OS; Ct 6 Breakers v Dolphins ump Blaze/Waves. 3.15pm: Canteen Taverners; Ct 1 Waves V Giants ump Patsy/Jodi H; Ct 2 Woteva v Boosh ump Sarah D/Drop Bears; Ct 5 Wahoo v Sea Monkeys ump Bellas/Blitz; Ct 6 Classics v Blaze ump Narelle/Jo L; Bye Brazt. Yamba’s third try, late in the game, sealed what was a good performance from a side that may be the team to beat for the 2010 season. Despite having several good opportunities to score, mistakes from the home team resulted in only one try from three possibles, the final score being 21-10. The result was disappointing for Byron, however the determination, fitness and skill level of this year’s side, the best seen in five years, bode well for the rest of the season. Byron’s forwards, an international love in of Scots, Poms, Chileans, Dutch and the occasional local, provided the equal third best on field, with Chilie and Dutchy played their best games so far this year, something that was critical for the success of the Byron pack. Rafe was dominant in several positions, with his ball carrying from fullback during counter-attacks a stirring sight. The player of the day, although only on for half a game, was Jimmy Cowan’s own love child, Dan, playing after a hard week and only two hours sleep.
