Shores Sharks victorious over Panthers
Main Arm squashes Geckos
The Shores United grade 14 Sharks celebrated their 14 game unbeaten run by winning the Football Grand Final Champions cup over local derby rivals the Byron Bay Panthers on Saturday. It was another close game just like their recent semifinal clash, which at times could have gone either way. It took a while for the nerves to settle on both sides while they tested each other’s defences. Half way through the first half Shaun Patten was able to get through the Panthers de-

fence and get a pass across goal to Carl Foreman. Carl was able to tap it past the keeper to put the Sharks in the lead. Both teams battled hard and not long before the break the Panthers made a beautiful attacking run and had several players unmarked. They took a shot in the top left corner, the keeper was beaten and had it not been for Jonah Owens kicking the ball off the line, the score would have been level. The Sharks returned the attack however Foreman was brought
down just outside the Panthers penalty area and had to be carried off with a serious knee injury. Soon after the break a set play corner kick by Sharks’ Scott Baber found Dan Carrol’s head and he knocked it in the back of the net to double the score, to the cheers of huge Shores United crowd. At the 45 minute mark the Byron Panthers made a fast break up the left flank and youngster Tai Bui unleashed a thunderbolt shot into the

Sharks net, that any men’s Premier League striker would be proud of. The goal gave Byron a new lease of life and they were unlucky just 5 minutes from full time when Sharks keeper Ollie Smithlee had to use all his skill with a brilliant save to stop another Panthers Thunderbolt. The Sharks took possession of the ball in the tense last few minutes till the final whistle. Three of the seven competitive teams at the small Shores United club won their way through to the semi final playoffs this season. The grade 13 all girls Redbacks fought out their Grand Final against Alstonville on Sunday. It was a tense, spirited and evenly matched game with the ball see-sawing from one end to the other. Talented Redbacks striker Stephie Foreman was unlucky on several occasions and keeper Sharni Montgomery made several brilliant saves to keep Alstonville scoreless. However Alstonville managed to score a lucky goal with only 3 minutes to go, and hung on to take the win 1-0. The Sharks and the Redbacks will be testing their skills in a fortnight against teams from all over Australia, at Gold Coast Cup. The teams are looking for spnosors – for more information call Coach Marc Patten on 0405 619 076. Many men harbour unfulfilled sporting fantasies, and if they don’t get the chance to feed their undernourished inner champion the resulting problems can wreak havoc in their normal lives. Nick Shand understood this, and the social cricket series played in his name is still turning potentially bad men into ‘bradmen’. Sunday’s action saw the reformatted Geckos up against Main Arm, six time winners and the team that proves the adage by somehow being much better than its parts. With the wind snaking across Lomath Oval, Greg of the Arm sent the Geckos in to bat. Evergreen* new ball pairing Baz and Brian swung it around like an Iggy Pop encore early on but talented Trent and solid Seymour soon had the Geckos scoring like backpackers in an Amsterdam cafe. Trent cruised into an untroubled retirement like a Rose Bay heiress, and then Greg-O, like a crazed junkie, started cracking it all over the park. Kyle (27), Simon and Greg were the best of the bowlers, but Kyle’s wickets and Greg-O’s retirement only brought back in the rampant Trent (57no), who like an irate dominatrix spanked it round with ruthless efficiency. Set 117 to win at nearly 5 an over Simon and Glen saw off the new ball and played with
more good sense than you would credit either of them with. Baz joined Simon and slowly but surely began to termite the total. Seymour and Peter Wynne-Moylan had success but neither could stop Simon (30no), who was steadier than a pistol shooter on beta-blockers. Kyle copped a wicked knuckleball from Sean which left barnstorming Brian and Wearnie, Main Arm’s answer to Warnie, in for the final dash. The plucky plumber pranced between the wickets like a startled gazelle but his triumphant return to cricket was thwarted when perennial bogeyman Methuselah Mick scattered his stumps. The Geckos couldn’t find a way to stop Brian however, who waved the bat around like a Queensland insulation contractor with a fat subsidy. The Main Arm veteran spoiled everyone’s afternoon but his own by bashing up 30 and stealing the game in the second last over. With three teams on two wins the famous invisible rulebook was gravely consulted, an after the usual controversy it was decided that the Left Bankers qualify in the number one spot, making next week’s first semi an enticing match up between Byron’s finest floggers, the FullTossers, and the annoyingly effective Main Armers. *Known as evergreen for their habit of turning up to the match looking quite sick.
Community backs Edyn
Brunswick Heads and the local community have pulled together to raise funds for 13 year old Eydn Fawcett, who is being treated for a tumour on the brain. A raffle was put together by Steve Foreman after teaching Edyn to surf in the early stages of her treatment. Steve also arranged for her to meet Women’s World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley. The raffle of surfing-related items and memorabilia boasts a main prize being a generously donated and signed Mick Fanning surfboard. Other donations include surfing memo-
rabilia from Pritarmo Adhernt (ASP world tour judge) and Layne Beachley. Layne donated a signed framed and mounted ‘Beachley Classic’ contest vest which was purchased by Craig Watson and is now on display at the Courthouse Hotel Mullum. The raffle’s final day will be at the Hotel Brunswick next Sunday between 2-4pm. Anyone purchasing tickets on the day will go into a separate draw of world tour surfing memoribilia and surf videos. For any further enquiries or to buy tickets phone Steve Foreman on 6685 1855. www.echo.net.au
