Further to last week’s dig at Council gifting land to developers, staff have told councillors that no permission has been given to gift public land as part of the Asset Protection Zone required for the large Suffolk Park DA on Clifford Street. In 2020, Council approved a DA for an exclusive restaurant bordering Scarrabelotti’s Lookout. It included car parking access that Council gifted to the developer. The land where the road is located was originally donated to the public by Frank Scarrabelotti. Once the DA was approved, it was promptly put on the market. Last week’s story regarding the 90 day letting cap incorrectly stated 15,000 homes would come onto the market if a 90 day cap was introduced. The correct number, as estimated by the NSW planning department, is 1,500. While NSW’s public school and Catholic school teachers will hold a joint strike on June 30 over staff shortages and pay, the government will ask itself why, in an inquiry, they have been so useless in providing reasonable working conditions and pay. See page 8. That’s sum guvmint action! Fines and costs totalling $285,600 have been awarded against Forestry Corporation NSW (FCNSW) after the Land and Environment Court found tree felling in exclusion zones had done ‘actual harm’ to koala habitat in Wild Cattle Creek Forest near Coffs Harbour. See page 8. Shireen Abu Akleh and Jamal Khashoggi were two US journalists, murdered by Israel and Saudi Arabia
‘Arakwal Jagun. My grandmother’s country runs from the rainforest to the sea, including the rivers, sacred sites, our creator and home Ironbark at Tallow Creek. This is “Gabul Jagun” – Carpet Snake Country’, says artist Nickolla Clark of her new art exhibition. It opens at Byron’s Lone Goat Gallery this Friday evening. Photo Jeff Dawson respectively. And now, Australian citizen and WikiLeaks publisher, Julian Assange, is fighting his extradition to the US by the UK Home Secretary, where he could face a 175 year sentence. Such is the punishment for doing real journalism. Established indie filmmaker, David Bradbury, is seeking financial support so he can continue to speak truth to power. With the end of the financial year upon us, David is asking the public to consider making a one-off tax deductible donation. Alternatively, you can become a member of the Frontline Film Foundation for as little as $5 a week. Visit www. frontlinefilmfoundation.org. au for more. If you want to be advised of the planning panel’s meetings (see page 1), you have to keep checking their website. After The Echo was handballed around by
the planning department for asking how to improve procedure, it became clear that the only way to improve
public awareness of panel meetings/decisions is by changing the law. Do they want us informed or not?
