Barrio – like eating at home with family and friends You’ll need multiple visits to experience the myriad of new and renewed items on Barrio’s menu.
The first cab off the rank is a re-introduction of beloved “Slinging Plates”. If you haven’t experienced this community favourite, now is your chance with popular local and visiting chefs on the lineup for this year. In addition to Slinging Plates, Barrio will reanimate the popular Aperitivo Hour in the courtyard, featuring aperitivostyle cocktails designed to whet the appetite, hors d’oeuvres, and plates that include freshly shucked oysters, olives, skewered seafood, and meats over coal. Join them Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons between 3pm and 5pm to see what all the fuss is about. Barrio is kicking off these events in a big way on the 15th of April (save the date) with Chef Dave Verheul
of Embla Melbourne making a very special pilgrimage to the Bay to sling some one-off plates your way. The cocktails on the night will showcase Dave’s own “Saison Vermouth”, to feature heavily in Aperitivo Hour drinks thereafter. This event will sell out fast – you can sign up for first access via Barrio’s Instagram – @barriobyronbay, where you will soon find a surprise announcement about the event. This week sees the launch of an all-new breakfast menu, curated by visionary Chef Jude – @judehughesley – as well as new cabinet salads that are updated weekly. Owing to overwhelming demand, the restaurant is also extending trading hours to seven days a week with an additional evening service on Wednesdays. Stay tuned for details of their Sunday roast with a seafood focus, to be released via Instagram. In keeping with their strong sustainability focus, Barrio has switched to Greenline cleaning products, which are 100 per cent environmentally friendly, green-tick-certified, and food-safe. They’ve also teamed up with local legends, the Byron Rangers, to establish a new community initiative providing compost to local farms. Nothing is wasted at Barrio – even bones and shells are reduced to ash and passed on to the Rangers. Located in the Habitat community development in Byron
A modern food renaissance at Barrrio. Bay’s Arts & Industry Estate, Barrio’s approach to dining is informal yet professional, with a strong focus
on using the best quality produce available to complement the Middle Eastern-inspired fare.

Dear food eaters, There’s nothing worse than an annoying vegan telling you about some ‘great vegan place’ they went to eat. So I am NOT going to do that – BUT, I am going to tell you about an amazing place I ate at recently. A place that sold food. Very yummy food. No Bones food. I took some photos of my meal, as you do when you’re an annoying vegan – so you can share them with all your annoying vegan cult members – but I am embarrassed to say that I didn’t get a shot of the entree because the konjac calamari strips with caper and dill mayo at No Bones were so tasty I couldn’t control myself. Split second – empty plate. I won’t rant on about how glorious the food was, but I will say that we ate the bao and pulled jackfruit (mouth watering); a ‘Byron Traditional Pasta’ which was a immensely delicious beetroot ravioli, garlic

sage butter, macadamia feta, rocket, radicchio and roasted walnuts; and an incredible dish with chickpea tempeh (drool). We also had an ‘oh-nowe-couldn’t-possibly-eatany-more’ dessert (we did share it betwixt us) of a spiced ginger cookie crumble, cashew mascarpone, fresh berries, raspberry coulis and cocoa nibs. GAH! So heavenly. My partner and I just looked at each other grinning deliriously. I won’t mention that No Bones is vegan AF, I’ll just say that everything on the
menu is 100 per cent plant based, including everything from the bar (you didn’t know alcohol wasn’t always plant based did you? Stay tuned… ). I have to say though, we were lucky that we booked, because No Bones was packed! And as we left, our table was almost immediately filled by the next ravenous couple who wanted to eat the yummy yummy stuff. Signed, – The Annoying Vegan
