If you like your docos, then The Regent in Murwillumbah is offering a double bill doco – with dinner on the rooftop – at the newly refurbished Regent Cinema. Wednesday 24 Feb at 5.15pm it’s Zappa! With the help of more than 10,000 dedicated Zappa fans, this is the long-awaited definitive documentary project of Alex Winter on the life and career of enigmatic, groundbreaking rock star, Frank Zappa. Alex utilizes thousands of hours of painstakingly digitized videos, photos, audio, and writing, from Zappa’s private archives. This is the first time these chronicles have been brought to a public audience. Then, at 8pm, it’s Wild Things by Sally Ingleton; a film that takes you to the frontline with environmental activists hell-bent on saving their futures from the ravages of climate change. Armed only with mobile phones, this growing army of eco-warriors are mobilising against forces more powerful than themselves and saying, ‘Enough!’. From chaining themselves to coal trains, to sitting high in the canopy of threatened rainforest or locking-on to bulldozers, their non-violent tactics are designed to generate mass action with one finger tap.

BY LIL LITH ARIES: The Ox year’s plodding pace calls for plenty of that most un-Arian trait: patience. When what you plan or want doesn’t come easily or quickly, Google Aesop’s tale of the Tortoise and Hare, summon up your inner turtle and make this year’s mantra: All the way to heaven is heaven TAURUS: Like Taurus, the Ox occupies second position in the oriental zodiac, and naturally this year suits you right down to the ground your four hooves are firmly planted on. But as always, conditions apply: which is the downside that could get you so stuck you grow roots. Then again, maybe you won’t mind that.

GEMINI: Not an auspicious year for mad gambles, with free rides pretty thin on the ground as well. Most profitable approach to mining this year’s possibilities is having a stepby-step plan and treading a steady path, without too many of the lateral excursions and diversions you find so diverting. Good luck with that. CANCER: The stoic Ox is capable of carrying heavy loads, so you’ll need to take extra care not to let this year activate that Cancerian penchant for shouldering the world’s burdens. Key to taking the weight off? A) Lots of your loony lunar humour. B) Knowing when to say ‘No’ – and saying it.

My grandmother would take me to the cinema quite a lot. She’d take me with her and sometimes she’d sneak my sister in, and then we’d sometimes just sit and watch the movie again. – James McAvoy

What does the Eastern new year of the White Metal Ox hold for your Western zodiac star sign…? LEO: Considered by oriental astrologers as a year for disciplined effort and getting your house in order, the Ox year could also bring out your inner dictator, so it’s a good idea to make the person you’re giving orders to yourself. That said, whatever work you put in is likely to be well rewarded.

LIBRA: The thrifty Ox year is traditionally considered to be a lean one. Spartan even, but hey – if anyone knows how to make belt-tightening look like the latest fashion statement, it’s you Venusians. So best approach this as the ultimate year of minimalist chic, clutter clearing and creative recycling.

VIRGO: The hard-working, methodical Ox has a style and rhythm similar to yours, so this year you Mercurians can make satisfying progress and be proud of your achievements. But all nose-to-the-grindstone and shoulder-to-the-wheel is way too a dull recipe, so don’t forget play, pleasure and the fun factor.

SCORPIO: The Ox year is said to be weakest in communication skills, with most problems likely to stem from misunderstandings, poor communication, stubborn refusal to compromise and/or harbouring grievances. So stay negotiable, keep coming back to your heart, loosen up a little: it’s hard to fly if you’re always riding the brake.

SAGITTARIUS: Your rebel spirit may chafe under the restrictions of sensible, no-nonsense, rule-following Ox year. But on the other hand, you could take advantage of the structured discipline it offers, not to mention persistence, diligence, dependability and determination. Bored to snores already? Work with it. CAPRICORN: The Ox has many qualities similar to Capricorn, which is both good and not so ab-fab news because your best and worst traits are likely to be on show this year – both positive and negative in full bloom. The key to finding a reasonable middle path? Communicate, communicate, communicate.

AQUARIUS: Outrageous isn’t the Ox’s favorite flavor, and its reactionary values could mean that eccentricity may not win your usual brownie points this year. Looks like it’s time to unleash the inner conservative lurking (surprise!) inside every Aquarian. Significant learning curves can be navigated by adopting disciplined flexibility as your number one dance step. PISCES: Not the most charismatic animal in the Eastern zodiac, the practical Ox is nevertheless capable of slow, steady, sustained effort towards accomplishing an established goal. Making this an auspicious cycle for beginning a project and seeing it through to completion. As a Pisces, it’s your job to supply this year’s magic.
