Letters Endangered market We’re in danger of losing the charming monthly Mullum Market. Please don’t let this happen. It’s such a treasure. It’s been operating for 30 years beside the Heritage Museum (in Myokum Street). This building was the original Mullumbimby Post Office that was moved to that site when the new post office was built. The market operates on the third Saturday of every month and gives stall holders the opportunity to sell beautiful handmade creations of all kinds, plants, succulents, their unwanted bricabrac, clothing, jewellery etc. The food is fabulous and you can eat Thai, Japanese, Indian and more, or sample the excellent coffees and cakes while you enjoy some of the best local music around. Dead Set was the band playing at the last market, to a very appreciative audience. A bunch of very experienced musicians playing a variety of musical genres including Cajun and New Orleans that never fails to brush the cobwebs off the mojo in these troubled times. A lot of people don’t know about this market, perhaps because the Farmers Markets are incredibly popular – and no wonder. But this market

come down to 16, and parents and community groups who care, and maybe even the Teachers Federation (but I won’t hold my breath on that) need to start sending the message. If there is one untapped force for change on this planet, it’s 16-year-old voters who are smart enough to care – and there are millions of them. Rod Murray Ocean Shores

Lower the voting age It was sad, yet heartening (somehow), to read last week’s article from Adel Pheloung, together with the quotes of her peers. As a fulltime secondary school teacher and now casual teacher it has not been infrequent, for years, to have discussions with young people and to hear their concerns about the future, and then I finally woke up; they need to be able to vote!

I frequently hear from ‘older’ young people who make comments that, more or less, blame the establishment of baby boomers for the state of the world ‘and nothing will change until they die off,’ etc. It’s a waste of time trying to argue against that, however, it’s obviously not just older Australians who are endlessly distracted, exhausted, or disempowered and opiated by junk media, junk environmental leadership of the major parties, and the corporate interests of endless slippery political promises, or who seem unable to initiate significant change. The voting age needs to

At what point do we say ‘Terrorism?’ At what point do we say ‘Political intimidation demands justice?’. To my surprise, people have been saying ‘Aren’t you afraid?’. What on Earth is going on? To recap, I wrote a letter – once, after four years – pointing out what appear to be dodgy planning decisions. Out of the blue, I then copped a council inspection based on an ‘anonymous’ tip that I had performed works without a development application (DA) relating to a spa. As I had not started work, an impromptu ‘fishing expedition’ was carried out, ▶ Continued on next page
