Hinterland residents who recently received a Council letter from the Sustainable Environment & Economy department containing accusations, without evidence, of alleged unauthorised dwellings are encouraged to attend a public meeting at the Main Arm shop this Saturday from 3pm. Those wanting more information sooner can call 6684 515 and leave a message to get in touch with a resident who is across the issue. See page 1 and editorial, page 12. Q Q Q Q
Last week’s front page story regarding ‘illegal dwellings’ contained two errors. Former NSW MLC Jan Barham was Byron Mayor from 2004–12, not in the 1990s, and the use of the word ‘illegal’ should be instead ‘unauthorised’. Impoverished boat people seeking asylum in Australia are not ‘illegal’, for example, despite the best attempts by extremists to normalise such terms. Q Q Q Q
Complicity Theorist (noun): ‘A person who accepts the political narrative of the day unquestionably; consumes mainstream media like it was 1980; and is prone to submissiveness, outbursts of irrational fear, and public shaming of free-thinkers’. Q Q Q Q
The NSW Nationals, known for their agrarian socialism, cronyism and love of coal above farming, have, in the middle of a global pandemic, made asshats of themselves. Their leader and NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro, folded like a cheap suit after threatening all sorts of weird things because he couldn’t kill koalas quickly enough. Friendly reminder; the local Nats rep is the meek and mild mannered Ben Franklin MP, who adheres to crazy Nationals policies because that’s what you have to do to be in power. See Mungo, page 12.

School leavers who are planning to come to Byron Bay for their Schoolies celebration are being asked to postpone their plans by Mayor Simon Richardson, Detective Acting Superintendent, Cameron Lindsay, Tweed/Byron Police District, and Chief Executive Northern NSW Local Health District, Wayne Jones. Rules around restrictions on social gatherings are expected to still be in place in NSW for November and December this year. Mayor Simon Richardson says, ‘The ramifications for the entire state are potentially enormous should there be just one case of COVID-19 in our area as a result of uncontrolled house parties’. Q Q Q Q
Rio Tinto CEO, JS Jacques has lost his job after blowing up ancient Indigenous artefacts in WA for a mining project. According to ABC, the decision was in part because First Nations organisations and shareholders put pressure on the foreign owned corporation. Pity he keeps his severance pay… Q Q Q Q

According to www.sbs.com.au, QLD police say they are ‘making enquiries’ into the conduct of an officer after he was photographed at a Black Lives Matter protest wearing a flag patch on his uniform that is associated with far-right extremism. The protest was held after a 49-year-old Indigenous woman died in police custody at the Brisbane City Watchhouse on Thursday.
