Council’s Community Initiatives Program aims to improve community wellbeing and quality of life for Byron Shire residents. Council invites applications for community driven initiatives that address a specific community need which builds a sense of community, and aligns with Council’s goals. Guidelines, including the assessment criteria, and an application form, can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.byron.nsw.gov.au/Community/Supporting-communities/ Grants-and-funding/Community-Initiatives-Program Applicants need to: • read the guidelines to understand if their organisation and project are eligible for funding; • show a matching contribution to the proposed project as outlined in the guidelines; • complete an application form on the template provided. To assist applicants in developing their application, in lieu of a Funding Workshop, a range of online resources and tips can be accessed via Council’s website www.byron.nsw.gov.au/Community/ Supporting-communities/Grants-and-funding/Community-InitiativesProgram. It is strongly recommended that potential applicants view the workshop resources to assist with their application. Applications close: 4.00pm Friday 3 July 2020 Enquiries: Joanne McMurtry 02 6626 7316 or jmcmurtry@byron.nsw.gov.au Please note: The canvassing of Councillors or Council staff in relation to this funding program will automatically result in disqualification of offending applicants.

Local News

Bypass project enters ƐIJĕ Ǖŕëō ƆƐëīĕ The fourth and final stage of the $20 million Byron Bay bypass project is on track to start before the end of the month, Council staff have said in a press release. After works for roundabouts, kerb and gutters, and extending the existing shared path, the bypass is expected to be open to traffic before Christmas, say staff. Within the media release, Council quoted local Nationals MLC Ben Franklin, -spruiking the contentious project, saying it is a ‘great milestone’. Given Mr Franklin is not a representative of Council, The Echo asked staff ‘why was it considered appropriate to include his comment?

Did Mr Franklin ask to be quoted in this Council PR? Who approved this?’ Council’s media rep replied, ‘It is a requirement of our funding agreement for the project to have all media releases celebrating major project milestones approved by Infrastructure NSW and the RMS. Both departments require approval from the Office of the NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, the Hon. Paul Toole. Minister Toole’s office makes the decision on who is quoted in the media release. In this case it was Ben Franklin. There have been other instances where Minister Barilaro and Minister Toole have been quoted in our bypass media releases’.

INVITATION TO SUBMIT COMMENT DRAFT AMENDMENT TO DEVELOPMENT CONTROL PLAN (DCP) 2014 RESIDENTIAL CHARACTER NARRATIVES – MULTIPLE CHAPTERS ‘Residential Character Narratives’ – capturing what makes one neighbourhood distinct from another in the way it ‘looks and feels’ – have been developed through consultation with the community and other key stakeholders as part of the drafting of our Residential Strategy.
