Culture IT’S THAT TIME OF THE MONTH AGAIN... for Stand Up Comedy Open Mic at The Courthouse Hotel MCd by Mandy Nolan. Come along and watch Byron Shire’s newest comedians you have never heard of grace the stage with their well-honed naiveté, their ultra-fresh gags and their courage cured in alcohol. These nights are the most exciting comedy nights of all. Absolutely anything can happen. Each new performer holds infinite promise. The promise of being the most rare of treasures; the unknown and untested true master of stand up comedy, a diamond in the rough, a comedy god walking among us. It could be any one of them –– she or he who looks, from the outside, to be an OCD bank teller, who not even their housemates suspected to be working late into the night striving tirelessly to be an ever greater story teller, jokester, improviser and comedian extraordinaire. This may be your only chance to see ‘The One’ break onto the comedy scene. ‘The One’ from the legends of old that herald the day ‘They’ will arise to claim their place in The Comedy Heavens, alongside all the great comedy saints. Don’t miss it – at the Courthouse Hotel, 8pm Thursday. Courthouse Comedy Courthouse Hotel, Mullumbimby, Thursday 8pm.

HONEYLAND Palace Cinemas is offering Opening Day discounts to our Movie Club and Golden Club members for the captivating documentary Honeyland (M). Recently nominated for Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature at the 2020 Academy Awards, this offer will be available for its day of release on Thursday, 5 March. When a nomadic family move in and break Honeyland’s basic rule, the last female wild beekeeper in Europe must save the bees and restore the natural balance. Debut feature documentarians Ljubomir Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska maintain a widescreen epic, yet portray an intimate collaboration between filmmakers and subject. With a surprising sense of humour, it’s a tough and tender portrait of the delicate balance between humankind and nature. Honeyland, opens at Palace Cinema, Thursday, 2.15pm and 6.45pm.

PISCES THE FISH With communicator Mercury reversing into the sign of the wild mind – what could possibly go wrong? Plenty. So keep a firm rein on your mental mechanism…

ARIES: Your planet protector Mars wants you concentrating on long term planning: not easy when everything’s slipping and sliding around you, but necessary. Mercury’s twoweek dip into your technozone can definitely help. At next week’s full moon it pays off big time to be organised, so start now by taking care of those deets. TAURUS: In Taurus, your guiding star Venus behaves like an earth goddess in her ultimate comfort zone. With the love planet’s annual tour of your sign giving you magnetic star status for the coming month, others want what you’ve got, Mercury kicks in with out-of-the-box ideas, and next week’s full moon is ultra-seductive.

Session Times: Thu 5 Mar - Wed 11 Mar

THE CALL OF THE WILD Adapted from the classic 1903 novel by Jack London, The Call of the Wild is about the life of a stable and happy dog called Buck, whose domestic life ends when he is uprooted from his home in California and lands in the frozen wilderness of the Yukon region in Alaska. Buck then goes on to experience the adventure of a lifetime and finds his true calling; making friends along the way with John Thornton (Harrison Ford) – a Yukon local with a love of dogs. Director Chris Sanders (Lilo and Stitch and DreamWorks’ Dragons series) diverts away from the darker themes of the novel, and aims the film toward younger kids and families. This is largely achieved by using CGI for all the animals in the film, which has been done successfully in recent re-make films such as The Jungle Book and The Lion King. However, the overuse of CGI in The Call of the Wild is unfortunately its weak point. When you compare the film to Togo, which had a similar storyline and similar need for the use of multiple dogs, Togo used real dogs and achieved incredible success, reaching audiences on a much deeper and more ‘real’ level.

Harrison Ford is one of the saving graces of the film. His acting, along with the great music and breathtaking scenic shots make for a great family man-and-dog adventure film. The directing is also done well by Chris Sanders, but the decision to use all CGI repeatedly comes back to haunt the film – distracting and disconnecting the audience from the story. If you can get past this, the film will not disappoint.

GEMINI: With Mercury retrograde in stubborn Aquarius, Venus doing the dance of seven veils in your fantasy zone, Mars drumming up drama, and the full moon bringing emotions to the boil at home, this is a potentially challenging week. And one best faced full on, so don’t shy away from discussing security: domestic, financial and emotional. CANCER:

As Venus moves into your astrological sector of friendship and technology, while Mercury reverses into your privacy zone this week, you’ll do your most successful work behind the scenes. Best to keep intel close to your chest and upgrade online security – besides which, a bit of mystery and intrigue spices up one’s love life.

LEO: Venus is looking forward. Mercury wants to talk about state-of-relationship issues, while Mars agitates for a change in them; all of which could make or break a current alliance. Around early next week’s full moon, expect some kind of turning point where finances and the future are concerned. VIRGO: Mercury and Saturn meet up this week for an organising drive, while Venus has you attracted to adventurous spirits with big ideas – also, speaking out about your own feelings in heartfelt convos, making special connections, and receiving well-earned appreciation at annual Virgo full moon next Tuesday. Good luck with the organising.

LIBRA: Venus in your zodiac sector of relationship intensity could make this a steamy month, so if that heads towards overwhelming, don’t be slow to phone a friend. The welcome balance? Mercury in fellow air sign, Aquarius, lightening the astro-climate for some frisky, unpredictable fun. Expect the unexpected and be ready to say ‘yes’. SCORPIO: With Mercury getting very verbal around domestic issues, keep the focus on solutions and common goals rather than recriminations. Because love planet Venus in your partnership house is bringing a sensual refresh for couples, and the time of year when unattached Scorps are most likely to meet their match…

SAGITTARIUS: Venus spending the next month in Sagittarians’ sector of self-care is your astral opportunity to organise more appealing, enjoyable daily routines. Mercury in your communication corner is talking up a storm for a week of dynamic discussions on social media and face time, with a possible win around next week’s full moon.

CAPRICORN: Venus in earthy Taurus suits you down-to-the-ground, and your charisma’s through the roof. Don’t waste it – get out of the house and onto the stage. Mingling outside your normal comfort zone could be profitable, though Mercury warns; if there are figures to be checked, this is the week to do it.

AQUARIUS: As Venus dives into your domestic zone, family matters could stimulate strong feelings. And with Mercury in Aquarius, you may have quite a bit to say. But with the quicksilver communicator in reverse, you’ll need to keep it kind. Need to do a financial review? Early next week’s your best date. PISCES: Venus for the next few weeks in your communication and socialising zone has you at the top of your networking game, in full conversational flow, speaking your mind. Caution? Don’t get caught up in trying to fix people. Best date for decision-making? Tuesday’s grounded, common sense, practical Virgo full moon.
