Letters Lost in acronyms In the world of acronyms in which the local council exists, it is completely understandable that the civilian population could very easily become lost. Here are but a few: UGMS, BILS, LSPS, RLUS, LRMDC, SEPP, DPIE, NCRP, LEP, DCP and MHCA. The last one is the Mullumbimby Heritage Conservation Area which covers the older part of Mullumbimby township. A recent effort in restoring/renovating one of the older houses has just happened. Rather than following the great Australian tradition of demolishing our history and bunging up a block of architecturally gormless flats/units/apartments, (under the pretence of affordable housing), this old house adds to the town’s character and story. So congratulations to the owner and the tradies for doing such a fine job. Chris Cooney Mullumbimby

Zero net emissions So Labor have decided to adopt a policy of zero net carbon emissions by 2050 echoing most thinking leadership in the western world. Wind and solar power will have to replace every existing coal power plant in Australia as they reach their retirement age. That amount again of renewable electricity will need to be built to provide for heavy industries’ move to electrification and hydrogen fuels. And that much solar and wind power

Cartoon Gary Cavanagh – Instagram: @gary_cavanagh yet again must be developed to provide for several million battery powered cars. Billions of trees will need to be planted over the next ten years so that in 30 years time they are drawing out enough carbon dioxide to counter the remaining inputs from carbon based fuels we have not been able to replace, such as jet fuel, coking coal, gas etc. To satiate the demand for energy in the developing world Australia will need to replace its coal exports with hydrogen fuel exports or risk less environmentally concerned countries expanding their coal mining industries. New legislative structures will need to be implemented to foster reduced

consumption and waste. All this without bipartisan political support. It’s time to get a move on, me thinks. Ron Leeks Ocean Shores

A little Linnaeus Call me cynical, but there’s something about the pronouncements of Brandon Saul, one of the people behind the proposed ‘eco-development’ of the Linnaeus Estate between Byron Bay and Lennox Head, that doesn’t add up. Surely the last thing Byron Shire needs right now is more tourism. In an era of ongoing climate crisis, economies based on bringing things in – whether they

are goods or services or, as in this case, tourists – are doomed to fail. Instead, we should be doing everything we possibly can to increase resilience and self-reliance. Future generations will not thank us if we allow this magnificently beautiful and ecologically important piece of land to become a high-end glamping and wedding venue, as is proposed. The Estate was established as a low-impact educational centre, with a particular emphasis on the environment. Now more than ever this core purpose needs to be preserved. John Page Byron Bay
