JIMMY WILLING’S HORSE OPERAS ARE HERE! Hooray! The long-awaited second album from Jimmy Willing & The Real Gone HickUps, Horse Operas, has arrived! Horse Operas was a term coined by silent-movie star William S Hart to describe his acting career in Westerns. Jimmy says: ‘I freely admit to being seduced by old Hollywood on this album; the iconography, the costumes, the sets, the songs, and the narratives… we have plundered them all and brought them back to life, creating not spaghetti, but kangaroo westerns. Hollywood, however, is not the only thing we have ransacked. Napoleon’s love letters to Josephine, Delecroix’s great canvas Liberty Leads the People, my own love life, folk music, and history itself have all been boiled down and distilled to create what I hope is an intoxicating recording, one that you will return to again and again. ‘The band is blues archivist Davey Bob Ramsey on guitars; tattooed man Clancy Robinson on drums; Kyogle mill worker Nirvana Glassey on double bass; the lass from Nyngan Gleny Rae Virus on piano accordion and fiddle; circus acrobat Gareth Bjlaand on banjo; grease monkey Captain Freedom on harmonica (Autry and Rogers); and Bertie Page and Lotus Jones on vocals (Ginger’s Can Can). ‘There was a huge amount of musical knowledge in the room so we decided to self-produce with everyone involved providing input. As such the ideas were diverse and lots of different styles went into the mix including cabaret, circus, country, folk, blues and of course rock’n’roll.’ Horse Operas was recorded by Patti Bom at The Music Farm, Mullumbimby, and mixed by her at Marley Studios, Byron Bay. Additional mixing and mastering was done by Michael Worthington at Soundworthy Ballina. THE KEEPER
If I told you that a former Nazi became a star goalkeeper for Manchester City, would you believe me? Well, it happened. Bernhard Trautmann, a German prisoner of war, joined the club in 1949 after declining repatriation to Germany. He managed to thrive in a hostile environment created by both players and fans, many of whom had recently returned from the war. However, despite all this he is now regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the club’s history. The Keeper follows the story of Trautmann, played by David Cross, and is a story of love, forgiveness, and resilience. Paul Byrnes from the Sydney Morning Herald says the film ‘puts some gloss’ on Trautmann as the real man was ruthless and tough, qualities that made him an excellent soldier and helped him succeed during his time at Manchester City. The movie had to go in this direction otherwise it would have been devoid of all sympathy for the main character. Who doesn’t love an interesting story based on true events? A worthwhile watch.
2040 AT SHEARWATER
2040 director Damon Gameau turns his focus to the health of planet. Gameau is known for his very successful directorial debt That Sugar Film, which explores the effects of consuming sugar while on a ‘healthy’ diet. With on-the-road case studies 2040 is structured as a conversation with his four-year-old daughter, who will be 25 years old in 2040. According to the review of the movie in the Guardian, the outlook of the film is refreshing. While there is a plethora of information justifying the terrible state the planet is in, Gameau believes there is room for a different story and that is what he shares with us in 2040. Shearwater Steiner School at Mullumbimby is inviting you to a screening of 2040 on Friday 13 September 6.15 till 8.10pm.
