Letters Greens losing voters Can’t keep silent any more. Last week’s Echonetdaily (June 27) had a story on koala deaths on our once-quiet rural roads. The next story was about the pro-development Green bloc voting for large-scale rural weddings. This is on top of this pro-development Greens bloc voting to stick a road through one of the last pockets of rainforest in Byron Bay so people and their cars can move faster from A to B. Can you guys join the dots here? I spent a lot of my own time and money helping this current Council get elected. I am SO disappointed. The Greens no longer have my support and I will be actively working to see them replaced by a true community-minded Council next election... that can’t come fast enough! Shame on you Greens councillors for sticking to the party line like a bunch of federal politicians! Rossco Phillips Mullumbimby
Deplorable roads Several roads in Brunswick Heads are in a poor state of repair. The above photo highlights the extent and depth of potholes in Slessor Lane Brunswick Heads which is an access for heavy delivery vehicles to a supermarket, where garbage trucks collect garbage, where patrons access the memorial hall, and local traffic accesses their properties. I believe there is potential for a child to drown should they accidentally fall while walking in this area. Faye Johnston Brunswick Heads

Slessor Lane Brunswick Heads. Photo Faye Johnston Q To the person responsible for Eureka Road Bridge – that was a joke. I am writing to the Byron Shire Council to highlight the total lack of responsibility for the efforts made on the Eureka Road Bridge, Eureka. For three months that bridge was closed to traffic. Cars were obliged to detour via Springvale Road, itself in desperate need of a serious overhaul. And in those three months, the horrific potholes were probably the cause of damage to several vehicles. Three months that bridge was closed to traffic, but I was not too bothered because I figured it takes time to do major work and improvements, even one as small as the bridge on Eureka Road. I imagined that Council may even be rebuilding that bridge, possibly
widening it to allow cars from both directions to cross simultaneously. Finally just over one week ago the bridge was reopened. I could not see much of a difference. There were still temporary barriers on each side. The road had been newly tarred, yet on that first day I could see cracks forming. Within three days the road was starting to develop potholes. Within one week, yes, one stinking, lousy week, actual potholes had appeared on the newly tarred surface. Who is responsible for this disgraceful waste of time and money? Was it a delayed April Fools prank? Our rates are being squandered on this sort of ‘work’. Will anyone take responsibility for this? I’m guessing not. I’m

‘We have come so far’ – what a misleading thought. Especially if we try to associate this saying with gender equality. To make this point very clear – did you know that women are fined $300 for swimming topless? Yes it is true, and it happened here in Byron, just a couple of weeks ago. So, the question is, does a man also get fined $300 for swimming topless? I think we all know the answer to that one. Another question: how is it possible that a law like this can be proposed within our parliament, and agreed upon?’ Can you imagine the group of men (because of course a woman is not going to pass a law like this) sitting around talking about it and then AGREEING to it? What the hell! This leaves me angry and frustrated. Taneal Cadou-Blake Mullumbimby
Palestine for peace With respect to Danny Wakil (letters June 19) his position – Palestinians don’t want peace but Israel does – is based solely on the unsupported assumption that what Israel offered in peace negotiations was always the right thing to offer, but what Palestinians offered was always the wrong thing to offer. Let’s take a look at the ▶ Continued on page 16
