Good Life

The Lismore Eats Monthly Food Market For the past seven months, Lismore has been enjoying a rotating range of food stalls at the region’s first dedicated food market. On the final Friday of each month a lovely crowd gathers at Lismore Showground to sample a new range of our region’s finest food vendors. If you feel like you’ve seen it all in markets, why not take a trip to Lismore and sample something out of your local comfort zone? Part of the reason for its popularity is that there is always something different at Lismore Eats. Lismore Eats is owned and operated by Jacob Stone, a local event organiser who has been working in various capacities in the events industry for the past thirteen years. This is the first event he has started from the ground up. ‘I started Lismore Eats after noticing the popularity of the AugustSeptember rush of food festivals and talking to locals about the need for a more regular event, one that could be enjoyed all year round,’ Jacob said. ‘So far, the event has been really well received by the locals, with some now making it their monthly dinner with friends.’ Lismore Eats has live music, onsite parking, and free entry. Additionally, partnering with Northern Rivers Jumping brings a new ride every month for the children. The next Lismore Eats is on Friday 26 April 2019 and will feature a range of stallholders, live music by Luke Vassella, children’s rides, and the Jom Makam Burger Challenge. To stay up to date about the range of stallholders make sure you visit www.lismoreeats. com or search Lismore Eats on Facebook!

A first for the shire’s residents & visitors, who rarely get to sample Ben Shewry’s food, the renowned chef in the kitchen at Melbourne’s Attica restaurant, which reached No. 20 this year on the World’s 50 Best Restaurant list will be at Harvest Newrybar. On Wednesday 1 May 2019 only, Ben Shewry will be joining head chef Alastair Waddell and wild food researcher Peter Hardwick foraging in the Byron hinterland before compiling a bespoke menu exploring Australia’s underutilised native ingredients. ‘We’re really excited to be working with one of Australia’s culinary icons and looking forward to seeing what creations Ben comes up with after sampling our unique ingredients’, said Alastair. French winemaker Louis Costa has created a special range of AURUM Modern Mead using ancient mead-making techniques and featuring local Australian honey alongside native ingredients (including strawberry gum, rosella flower, and feral guava leaf) for the occasion too. harvestnewrybar.com.au

There’s nothing better than finding a business that you feel shares your values. Not only do you ‘click’ with their product, but you feel good supporting them because, after a while, you come to trust that they are at least trying to do the right thing by their staff and suppliers. Whether you value ‘green’, ‘organic’, ‘sustainable’ produce, or seek some other positive change in society, Byron has always had some strong leaders in the field. For Bun Coffee’s David Kennedy, who roasts Fair Trade, organic, single-origin and Rainforest Alliance coffees sourced from all over the world in his Byron premises, the main question in adopting more ethical business practices has always been, ‘Why wouldn’t you?’ ‘When I am at the roaster, my sole focus is on producing the very freshest, most flavoursome coffee for the actual drinker,’ says David. ‘It’s my passion. I love to see people trying a single origin, or one of my unique blends, at our roastery door.’ But a great deal of thought goes into selecting which hessian sacks of beans arrive at the roastery door, and how the farmers and other producers of those beans are treated by suppliers. ‘There are roughly 25 million smallholder coffee-plantation farmers,’ says David. ‘It’s about creating stable prices, decent working conditions, empowerment of farmers and workers, better environmental practices, and regeneration of resources to help make the coffee industry we love so much more sustainable and viable in the long term. ‘We offer over 40 single-origin coffees – I started doing that in 1989 but I think the coffee drinkers have now come to value that connection to the regions and the growers. We have been the chosen supplier at Bluesfest since 2012, and owing to the high turnover we don’t do single origin, but rather our 100 per cent Certified Organic Coffee. And, unlike other coffee cups that can’t be recycled in the yellow bins, all the takeaway cups and lids are fully compostable and biodegradable in the green bins. If you like the coffee, which is now sold around the world, you can order it online (free delivery within Australia when you spend $100 or more!) or at their premises at 1A Banksia Dr, Byron Arts & Industry Estate (Mon–Fri 8am–4pm). buncoffee.com.au
