CULTURE SURF LEGENDS LOUNGE

The Byron Bay Surf Festival is just around the corner, presenting a weekend that celebrates surf culture then and now! The festival is all about creating a platform to bring surfers and those interested in surfing together in a celebration to showcase and support, to grow, and evolve a more sustainable industry and lifestyle. The four-day festival activates over 10 events including surfing, shaping, art, music, film, yoga, and environment with an awareness and focus on sustainability, education, and innovation. One of these events is at the Byron Theatre at the Community Centre on Thursday for a Q&A event hosted by Vaughan Blakey and called the Surf Legends Lounge. Surf legends Mark Occhilupo, Dave Rastovich, Taylor Steele (USA), and Dick Hoole chat with Vaughan about their amazing lives and their love of the ocean. Rastovich is a surf activist passionate about engaging surfers in environmental issues and mobilising them to take action. Mark Occhilupo made his way onto the scene at 15, slipped away from the scene for a while, and then came back to win the 1999 World Title at 33 and has one of the most impressive surfing careers – he’s at most events still free surfing as well as he ever did! Taylor Steele is a surf film producer and director from the US, responsible for Momentum, Proximity, Sipping the Jetsreams, Castles in the Sky and The Drifter… and Dick Hoole, well he’s a director, cinematographer and photographer, someone obsessed with pulling focus on surfing for most of his career. Find out what makes these legends tick at the Byron Centre on Thursday at 7pm. Tickets and program info for this 20–24 Feb fest on byronbaysurffestival.com.au.

LIFE AFTER DEZ

BABA DEZ NICHOLS IS AN INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED SPEAKER AND TEACHER, DAKA, AUTHOR, SINGER/SONGWRITER, AND TRANSFORMATIONAL GUIDE WHO HAS BEEN FEATURED ON NUMEROUS TV AND RADIO SHOWS FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION IN THE HEALING ARTS AND EVOLVING HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS. HE IS A GLOBAL NETWORKER AND SEEDER OF LOVING FREEDOM WHO TEACHES THE SACRED TEMPLE ARTS TO SHARE, INSPIRE, AND SUPPORT OTHERS IN THE ACTIVATION AND INTEGRATION OF LIFE-FORCE ENERGY. What does it mean to have fully integrated spirituality? Does a person need to be devoting a lot of time to achieve this? It means that your spirituality is inclusive of all that you are. Masculine/feminine, spirit/animal, body, heart, mind, and emotions. What does it mean to be free? Do we understand what that means, do you think, or have we got it all wrong? Freedom means that we are fully responsible. Responsible to all we are and all that is. What are the blocks or problems that people come to you with most commonly? Not knowing who we are and what is means to be a fully integrated adult human being. Because most people are not awake, they don’t even know that they don’t know. So, most people start with where they are at. Wanting better health, relationships, sex, clarity, personal power, etc. What is Sex Magic? Do you think porn culture has impacted on people’s experience in a positive or negative way? Sex Magic is using our intention and life-force energy to manifest in alignment with source. In order to do this you need to be a fully integrated being. You work a lot with other teachers and facilitators. As a teacher of teachers what do you try to impart? Walk your talk, be the embodiment of what you teach, stalk your shadow, your reality will give you feedback, share power with other teachers, enjoy your occupation, have fun, stand for Love, Power, and Freedom. Baba Dez Nichols will be presenting two sessions at the Taste of Love Festival: Fully Integrated Spirituality on Friday 1 March and Traversing the Cutting Edge of Spiritual Shamanism on Saturday 2 March.
