Federal integrity commission needed: Labor Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus QC stopped by the electorate last week to spruik Labor’s plans to establish a National Integrity Commission (NIC). While NSW has its own independent integrity commission – ICAC – the federal government does not. Federal member for Richmond Justine Elliot said, ‘In recent years there has been a loss of faith in the ability of politicians and the public service to properly represent and serve the public interest.’ ‘All Australians deserve to have confidence in the integrity of their government, their parliament, the public service

and our public institutions. ‘While there is not substantial evidence of widespread corruption at a federal level, that is not a reason to
do nothing. ‘A bipartisan Senate inquiry has shown that Australia’s current federal anticorruption framework is
uncoordinated, inconsistent and confusing. While many agencies have some partial responsibilities in this area, their work is haphazard and overlapping. ‘It’s clear we need to strengthen and simplify our anti-corruption framework – to weed out serious and systemic corruption, promote integrity, and restore the trust of the Australian people in their representatives and institutions.’ Local residents can show their support for the National Integrity Commission by signing Labor’s petition at: www.alp.org.au/support_ the_nic.

Brunswick Nature Sculpture Walk (BNSW) encompasses all aspects of the environment, from the actual sculptures, to the materials used, to the setting of the exhibition itself. Participating artists Marion Gaemers, Lynnette Griffiths, Lynne Adams and Shona Wilson are offering a masterclass where you will be guided to create a sculptural form from found objects, recycled or re-useable materials, and natural fibres.
Their art practice reflects themes of the environment, current ecological issues and highlights the need for us to conserve, reuse and recycle, rather than continue to live in such a disposable society. As the exhibition is set along the beautiful Brunswick River, visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves completely in their surrounds, admiring not only the incredible artworks but also the natural environment itself.
The BNSW is a free event not to be missed; not only will you see a myriad of outstanding sculptures, but you’ll also be doing the environment a favour by becoming more aware and in tune with what needs to be done to save this beautiful planet.
