A recent video report from the Nine Network of a courier delivery driver appearing to steal mail from the mail boxes in an apartment complex is a timely reminder to be aware of letterbox security. Some say with the increase in online shopping and an increase in the number of people choosing apartment living for the first time it has never been more appealing for the
perpetration of this type of crime. It is not only packages that go missing; identity theft is on the increase too. School holidays see an increase in this type of theft, with many people being away on holidays and mail building up. Body corporate groups are asking to make it a law for delivery drivers to remove helmets before entering an apartment block. It’s true this would
help identify perpetrators after the fact. Some simple measures can be taken to avoid being the victim of such crime. • Put a padlock on your letterbox. • Get a post office box so that your mail doesn’t come to your home. • When you go away have someone collect your mail for you, or otherwise have it held at the post office.
