concerned is for dogs to be kept on a leash on beaches, a compromise which is urgently needed. K Kyprios New Brighton

Please explain

While riding his bicycle along South Golden Beach my 72-year-old father was attacked by a dog. Coming from behind, the dog took a large chunk out of his leg, resulting in a serious wound. The owner didn’t attempt any responsibility for the dog’s attack. My father, bleeding profusely, was more concerned at getting home

Letting fictions Victims Of Holiday Letting would like to correct misleading information provided by two councillors in Byron Shire Echo articles. In the January 25 issue of The Echo, Cr Richardson stated that ‘Council’s legal challenges for holiday letting compliance had resulted in a high cost to ratepayers. Two years and $300,000 later…’ Cr Spooner (Echo, March 1) stated, ‘The last council decided to stop chasing people through the courts in regards to the use of properties for holiday letting because it was costing a heap of money.’ This prompted a fact check in response to these councillors’ assertions. A question on notice was asked during public access at the February continued on page 12

quickly than confrontation. Where was the owner while the dog attempted two attacks before successfully biting? It’s not a life-threatening situation but my father now has to change his lifestyle and outlay money on dressings until the wound heals – which according to the doctor is expected to take a while because of the severity of the wound. Hopefully it will heal without complications but this is an additional concern because of an existing health condition. And the owner of the dog? Just another fun morning at the beach. Absolutely no impact on their life whatsoever but it has wreaked havoc on an innocent victim left with the mess for months afterwards. Apparently it was the second dog-bite incident that morning. An intelligent compromise for everyone

This is a message to the rock throwers of St Helena. It’s 9.30 at night, we’re travelling at 80km/h down St Helena Hill, headlights pushing back the dark. Suddenly, out of nowhere a rock flashes into view and smashes into our car windscreen. Shards of glass shower the driver. The windscreen shatters into opaque crystals, completely blocking visibility. Injured, shocked, unable to see the road, the driver loses control. The car careens onto the opposite side of the road and crashes into an oncoming vehicle. At a collision speed of 160 km/h no-one stands a chance. To you rock throwers who get an adrenaline rush by attacking unknown people in their cars, the message is clear: manslaughter. Fortunately for you, the rock you threw

smashed into the passenger side of our windscreen. We nearly lost control, but managed to pull over, shocked and disbelieving. This happened on Friday March 3 at St Helena, and was the second attack that night. If anyone knows who was responsible, please call the local police before a deadly tragedy occurs. Council GM Ken Gainger stated in The Echo December 7, 2016, ‘A special rate is based on the council levying a special or higher rate upon a certain class of properties or a specific precinct because of extraordinary/special circumstances.’ Please explain! Did I miss an ‘extraordinary’ cyclone, flood, bushfire or disastrous event in the ten years I have lived in Byron Shire? There is nothing “extraordinary” about Council not being able to manage their funds to avoid a special rate variation. Margaret Keating Ocean Shores
