Junior life savers tested at Lennox Enduro The Lennox Head Enduro junior Surf Life Saving competition was held at the Lennox Head Surf Club last Saturday and attracted over 70 entrants. “It was great to see all the competitors put in the effort and shake off the winter cobwebs,’ Lennox Head surf sports coordinator, Laurel Moston said. ‘This is our region’s premier junior lifesaving endurance event and is a great way for juniors to sample the competitive world of an ironman or ironwoman in a safe and supportive community environment,’ Laurel said. ‘A successful day was had by all, with competitors coming from North Cliff and as far as Port Macquarie!’ The event is open to competitors aged from u/11 to u/17, and includes swim, board and run legs, with distances increasing with age. The u/11 competitors swim 400m, board paddle for 1km and run for 1km; whereas the u/17 competitors swim 1km, board paddle for 3km, and run for 3km. Cash prizes were up for grabs for first, second and third placed competitors in each age

Life savers return to north coast beaches Far north coast surf life savers returned to active beach patrols last Saturday. Over 21,000 active surf life savers from the 129 surf clubs along the NSW coastline will be on patrol during the 2016/17 season. Surf Life Saving NSW President David Murray raised the flags on the new patrol season. ‘Our proud record of zero drowning deaths between our iconic red and yellow flags is something we cher-

people drowned in NSW coastal waters, the highest annual total on record. The inaugural Surf Life Saving New South Wales Coastal Safety Report showed that 92 per cent of victims were male, 66 per cent of all drowning deaths occurred in waters greater than 5km from the nearest life saving service and swimming/wading, rock fishing and diving/ snorkelling were top three most common activities at the time of death.

Tweed Valley Summer Racing starts with a squall A great turn out of 22 boats at Fingal Head on Sunday saw 35 crew racing in some of the most challenging conditions the club has seen as the new season of sailing got underway. The Tweed Valley Sailing Club’s hotly contested Summer series started under a gentle breeze. But just before the yachts had set themselves for the start they were blown away by a sudden squall that sent the boats flying to every corner of the river. Not everyone got back to the start on time but there were plenty of opportunities to catch up with 180-degree sudden wind shifts catching out even the experienced skippers.

All the sailors were up for the challenge and most completed the three-lap race.
