the starting pistol to exit this year’s doldrums. You’re off and running: ambitious, determined and persistent, but remember successful working relationships need communication. And before you get too attached, keep in mind that not getting something you want can turn out to be the greater blessing.

TAURUS: Your ruler Venus in sultry Scorpio develops emotional muscle tone, bringing depth to everyday affairs. And takes you back to basic principles if this week’s interactions go pear shaped, by asking: What did this situation want to be before it fractured, frazzled, became complicated? Questions beget answers, so take your pick. GEMINI: Have escalating stress and responsibilities made you a stranger to pleasure and recreation? Then shake off the weighty vibes of recent months – come out to play. Let this week reaquaint you with the fun of strutting your stuff. But remember personal and/ or professional partnerships could get rocky unless everyone’s treated with respect.

CANCER: Cancerians are always sensitive, sometimes emotionally edgy. This week, treat other people’s feelings lightly at your own risk because with Mars and Pluto excavating the past, reactions can be unexpectedly volatile. As Jupiter buffs up your leadership skills, best moments will come from helping others, feeling needed and productive.

SAGITTARIUS: Everything’s a guide, even what we don’t like or agree with. There are always many stories operating simultaneously in any situation – often conflicting, all true from someone’s point of view. Only question is which version, which horse, you choose to ride. Does it have energy? Vitality? Beauty? How does it make you feel?

N

CAPRICORN: Mars and Pluto moving forward in Capricorn farewell the heavy weather of recent weeks with the professional power surge you’ve been aiming for. As Jupiter’s magnifying glass amplifies your many strengths (along with those lesser, shall we say, imperfections) this week sees you assertive, determined, and in some cases not a little driven…

LEO: The sun, your planetary ruler conjunct enterprising Jupiter’s a cause for jubilation in anticipation of a personal renaissance, with the opportunity for truly epic change. Leos understand stagecraft, so be sure to check that your backstage aspirations and intentions are the right fit for launching this latest, updated version of your majestic self. VIRGO: When your diagnostic skills peak round midweek Virgo moon, to speak or not to speak’s the essential question. Ditch an either/or stance and express uncomfortable feelings or opinions honestly and kindly. Then consider Virgo Mary Oliver’s poetic question: What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? LIBRA: The trifecta of sun, Jupiter and Friday’s moon in Libra ask who and what you want to align with for the coming year. Audacious, abundant Jupiter, planet of opportunities, only visits your sign once every twelve years with its cosmic rocket fuel to accelerate advancement and fast results, so ditch gilt – go for gold.

K

L

SCORPIO: Venus in Scorpio ensures plenty of pleasant and pleasurable attention from the right faces in the right places. Watch bossy Mars in Capricorn though, because in order to really receive you have let go control (no easy ask for Scorps), but willingness to show vulnerability could really strengthen your credibility this week.

AQUARIUS: Mercury in Virgo recommends choosing your words carefully, because banging on about undesirable circumstances just makes them bigger. As dwelling on the unlovable qualities of others only keeps these repeating in your life. Tune in instead to what wants to speak through you. Ask for the unselfish eloquence to be a responsible voice.

PISCES: This week requires taking care of seemingly annoyingly small, but actually quite important, details. Ticking off lists and following through will definitely be worth the effort. After that, when opportunity comes knocking – and it will – Jupiter offers the confidence to try new things, to break with routines of past patterning and get joyfully creative.

CULTURE THINKING BIG

featuring Mark Dapin, Mark Humphries and Zachary Jane

In a lightning-fast tag team manoeuvre, NORPA’s Big Think announces a Chaser switcheroo in the forthcoming State of Indignation event. Previous contender Charles Firth has been whisked away to cover the US election so he has deftly passed the baton to Chaser stablemate Mark Humphries. In 1964, Donald Horne called Australia the lucky country and described it as run mainly by second-rate people who share its luck. Fifty years on, has much changed? Are we still the lucky country? Evidence would suggest we’re far from a clever country!

Tuesday 11 October, 7pm. NORPA at Lismore City Hall, tickets: $30, bookings: www. norpa.org.au or 1300 066 772.

PETER PAN IN THE BRIGHT LIGHTS

Join NORPA’s Big Think on Tuesday 11 October at 7pm for a wide-ranging conversation on politics, both local and global, on terror, both real and imagined, cultural diversity and tolerance, but not in my backyard, and the importance of dangerous ideas. NORPA Big Think event
