Rethink rubbish
I hope that whoever it is that thinks Coolamon Scenic Drive is a rubbish bin will have a rethink and take their beer bottles, energy drink/ whisky cans and McDonald’s rubbish with them to their destination in future. Sarah Smith Mullumbimby
Overdevelopment
Ex-Eagle Joe Walsh released an album in 1981 titled There goes the neighbourhood and that was the first thought that came to me after five councillors chose to support the
planning department’s recommendation to approve the DA for a ten-unit development at 116 Stuart Street, Mullumbimby. Not only is this overdevelopment in the heritage conservation precinct, it will also cause a great deal of disruption and loss of amenity for the immediate neighbours. My biggest fear is that it will set a precedent even though I have been assured that each DA will be treated on its merits. Koho Projects and similar developers must be jumping for joy and just waiting to pounce on the next block of land in a deceased
estate within 400 metres of the CBD under the guise of providing affordable housing. A rescission motion has been lodged and at the time of writing I’m not sure whether this will happen. My thanks to Crs Cameron, Dey, Wanchap and Richardson for supporting our efforts and responding to the community’s overwhelmingly rejection of this inappropriate development. Chris Cooney Mullumbimby
I must decline
I am unsure what I have done to deserve Matthew Hartley’s
Marcus Pearce presents...
endorsement for mayor (Letters, June 29) and must hastily put to bed any possibility that such a frightening scenario could ever come to pass. I am the first to admit that I am not mayor material, my emphasis being more on fixing the current rather than forging into new fields. Matthew has made it clear that he has had issues with Simon as mayor but this is the cost of the role; you are always going to upset someone. Anyone who witnessed Simon’s eloquent and forceful demolition of the rock-wall troglodytes at the last council meeting will have no doubts over his skills and where his heart lies. May I modestly suggest that Byron Shire may be able to cope with both of us. Tom Tabart Bangalow

The Byron Shire and wider community deserve to hear the Butler Street community’s response to the approval of Council’s Byron Bay bypass on Butler Street. We would like to thank the hundreds of locals and visitors alike who supported our campaign and apologise for not succeeding in penetrating the hearts and minds of those in positions of power dictating an outcome both highly destructive and continued on next page
