The amended NSW legislation which threatens antiCSG protesters with a maximum jail term of seven years has inevitably led to comparisons of the Baird government with Queensland’s BjelkePetersen regime (1968–87) or, even further back, to the days of corrupt NSW premier Bob ‘Run The Bastards Over’ Askin (1959–65) in their protection of their mates’ interests over the welfare of the general public. The NSW Bar Association and the Law Society have spoken out against the legislation which appears to give draconian powers to the police – which have pretty generous powers as it is. The principle of community consultation has been thrown out the window and various Indigenous groups worried about sacred sites in mining hot spots haven’t had a lookin.
