3 to 7 and the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Team coach Adrian Filipic of Ocean Shores Aquatics says they are going to be well prepared. ‘There have been some amazing results along the way’, he says, ‘including many records broken.’

Mullum-Bruns kids super mascots

Champion swimmer Moesha Johnso rises most days at 4.30am to fit in a two-hour training session before heading to Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast campus for her biomedical science studies. The 18-year-old Tweed Heads local is focused on the upcoming Australian Swimming Championships, which will see some of SCU’s best swimmers line up behind the blocks to race for the chance to fulfil their dreams with selection into the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams for Rio in August. ‘This is my first Olympic selection trials. It would be amazing if I make the Aussie team but it’ll be tough,’ said Moesha. ‘When you get a

chance to swim among people who take the sport as seriously it’s really inspiring and motivating. ‘My goal is swimming at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.’ Moesha’s studying SCU’s new Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree as a pathway to becoming a surgeon. ‘Luckily SCU offered biomedical science from this year, which worked perfectly for me in terms of not having to travel to the north end of the Gold Coast, plus SCU fits in with my training schedules and the campus is really close to home,’ she said. ‘Having flexibility with my studies is important with all my training. I come to campus for three units, then the

fourth one I do online. SCU is really easy with communicating about times I may miss with swimming and helping me arrange other things. The staff are friendly and care about me and all the other students.’ Moesha said she was grateful to secure a Summerland Credit Union Scholarship through SCU’s Rising Stars Scholarships program. ‘The Summerland Credit Union Scholarship is a huge help with buying textbooks and the other costs in getting established at university,’ she said. The Australian Swimming Championships are being held from April 7 to 14 at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Adelaide.

Water polo is a winner for Mullum Saturday was a massive day for the kids from the Mullum-Brunswick Soccer Club. A record squad of 36 mascots and their accompanying entourage of parents and fans took control of Suncorp Stadium at an A-league fixture of epic proportions. Reigning champions Melbourne Victory could do little to suppress the current table-toppers Brisbane Roar after they were gifted with the good fortune of being invited

to run out onto the pitch with 11 of Mullumbimby’s most experienced Miniroos. Finishing the first half in a dominant 2–0 position, space was vacated for 15 of our brightest junior footballers to attend to half-time entertainment. With time between for a quick television interview by our junior female representative, Frankie, while 10 more up-and-coming Miniroos took to the field under the

guidance of our senior club mascot, Kol Dimond, in a dazzling display of football finesse that clearly inspired the Roar to finish their second half in even stronger form, closing out the game at 5–0. Many, many thanks to the good folk at Brisbane Roar for their continued support and friendship, with the biggest little club in the Shire truly living up to its name. A special mention to Rozanne Burley and Andy Pinches of the Roar for all of their efforts.

In this week’s edition of dob-in-a-mate, congrats to Paul Banister from his buddies at First National Byron Bay. Paul played for Mullumbimby in the Far North Coast Water Polo Championship.
