IN THE MICK Irish singer/songwriter Mick McHugh is back in town after being down south in Victoria working on his new album with Australian music icon Shane Howard of Goanna band. Mick has toured relentlessly in Australia with performances at the Sydney Opera House, Bluesfest, Port Fairy Folk Fest, and kicked off the year with a successful crowdfunding campaign to record his debut album. SMITH STREET ON JONSON STREET The Smith Street Band are in the midst of another epic tour touching down at the Hotel Great Northern on Friday. Melbourne’s The Smith Street Band have had a stellar few years, touring relentlessly both here in Australia and abroad in the US, UK and Europe. The band released album Throw Me In The River to critical acclaim, landing Triple J album of the week and debuting in the ARIA Top 20 album chart. The band played at Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK in August as well as at Splendour in the Grass.

Top local and international artist Lisa Hunt’s first show back in Byron after her annual tour of Europe and the US will be a special African (l.e.a.f) Dance Party this Friday at the Byron Bay Golf Club, to celebrate local charity African LEAF’s 10th anniversary. A not-to-be-missed event, which is promised to include some surprise special guests. Suzannah Espie’s striking new album Mother’s Not Feeling Herself Today tells the story of motherhood. But it’s not the usual sanitised one that you might expect. This is an album that explores a woman’s sense of failure, as it bravely navigates the territory of post-natal depression, isolation and disconnection.

All in all Mother’s Not Feeling Herself Today is a concept album; the title track is a honky-tonk country song. There is another song set in the park, a mother and her young daughter in the park feeling very lonely; I wrote that as a nod to a book called A Divided Heart by Rachel Power about creativity after motherhood – how 99.9 per cent of the time your mind is elsewhere! I have always worked hard at being present. I used to woonder what the hell is wrong with me?!
