Queensland is taking another step out of the dark ages by working towards scrapping the ‘gay panic defence’ legislation. Under the defence a murder charge could be reduced to manslaughter if the defendant established their victim was a homosexual who ‘came on’ to them, and the killing was in self-defence. A Catholic priest, Fr Paul Kelly, started a petition (now with 226,592 supporters) over two years ago – after a man was killed in his churchyard and the attacker tried to use the defence to get a reduced sentence – to abolish the odious defence, established in 1997.
