Carson’s glib analysis As much as I loathe the works of Bush, Blair, Reagan, and Howard in Iraq, the article by Kevin Carson which appeared in The Echo of July 29 is as unbalanced and shallow, as glib and deceptive, and as false as their analysis and public statements. To take Carson seriously is to join an easy chorus of critics. It is a chorus of self-deceit. Let us roll through Iraq’s history and the alleged ‘ownership’ of ISIS by an alleged West. Does anyone wish to say the overthrow of the Ottoman Empire was a mistake? Who prefers imperialism? Does anyone wish to say they could, without hindsight, have done a better job of defining borders in the region post WW1? Does anyone wish to say Iraq should not have been constituted strong enough to hold its own against re-invasion by Turkey, or conquest by Syria or Persia? Does anyone wish to say the movement from imperial rule, to monarchy, to pro-fascist movements, to democracy, to Marxism, to coup, to dictatorship, has been handled better everywhere else and throughout history? That politics without tradition is easy? Does anyone wish to say there was no Cold War, or that Stalin should not have been opposed, or that they would prefer to live under the rule of a Marxist dictatorship, and that it was wrong to oppose that movement? Does anyone wish to say the peoples of the Middle East and Afghanistan are children, who cannot make up their own minds about religion or social ques-
tions? That everything that they think and do is someone else’s doing? Carson admits Iraq functioned as a society. It still would but for religious movements. Carson wishes us to believe these movements are somehow ‘western’ creations. Has he never read the texts quoted by the likes of al-Baghdadi and Khomeini? Does anyone wish to pretend the execution and beheading of captives is not exactly what Muhammad practised? What level of arrogance and ignorance claims to know those peoples’ minds? If a repressed majority who rose against oppression – the Shia of southern Iraq – subsequent to gaining majority power via democracy choose to abuse that power, does anyone argue they should not have the right to vote? Carson and his ilk ultimately fantasise without responsibility. That Iraq is a mess is undeniable. That the invasion was a mistake, I would agree. But to impute to every error malign motives, to criticise every past decision as if there were obviously better alternatives, or even any alternatives, and to pretend that the actors in the conflict are creations, rather than intelligent human beings making sincere decisions based on their cultural backgrounds and religious impulses, is callow, shallow, and erroneous. This is Iraq’s war. We had ours. Give thanks for the culture we have, but remember it took a lot of blood to get here. Matt Hartley

Be ready for the burp The isotope carbon-12 forms 98.93 per cent of the carbon on Earth, while carbon-13 forms the remaining 1.07 per cent. The concentration of carbon-12 is further increased in biological systems because biochemical reactions discriminate against carbon-13. During both the Permian Extinction (250 million years ago) and the PETM Extinction (55 MYA) there was a substantial decrease of carbon-13 which can only be plausibly explained by massive release into the ocean and atmosphere of biological carbon stored in shallow marine and land sediments. The obvious source is the selfaccelerating melting of methane clathrate permafrost initiated by a global warming trigger, such as is now occurring with carbon dioxide emissions. Methane may bubble out progressively or undergo sudden pressure release, potentially causing very large tsunamis. The massive/rapid release of methane causes massive/rapid global warming and consumption of atmospheric and oceanic oxygen with the oxidation of methane forming carbon dioxide. Such a ‘methane burp’ could occur any time now. The oxidation may occur gradually or explosively via detonation of methane clouds with associated enormous shock waves.
Massive/rapid warming causes collapse of food chains and habitat (eg, no more Big Macs and no more McDonald’s). Hypercapnia is a condition of abnormally elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the blood. When carbon dioxide concentration reaches ten per cent, panic, convulsions, and eventually death occurs. Also the coinciding reduction of oxygen concentration causes hypoxia. This results in widespread nearcomplete extinction. Only barrel-chested species with a high lung capacity have a chance of survival, such as occurred in the Permian Extinction. Mutate now, beat the rush! [Retallack et al, Geo. Soc. Am. Bulletin, 2003]. In short, carbon dioxide is the trigger and methane is the bullet. What you can do: 1. Get off the grid. Go solar. 2. Eat less than 250g of animals per week. 3. Use a light electric vehicle. 4. Inform politicians and protest against fossil fuel companies. 5. Begin the work to remove excessive carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. 6. Support research into climate engineering to avoid catastrophic arctic methane release. Sapoty Brook Mullumbimby
