Danielle de Valera, a long-time north coast resident, has in her novel Magnificat created a town called Tuckaburra ‘which occupies, for the purposes of fiction, the space where Mullumbimby is to be found on maps of the so-called real world’. And despite all the characters being animals, there seems to be some sort of correlation with the so-called real world – you may even be in it. The e-version of Magnificat is available for $2.99 from Kindle, iBooks, Kobo and so on. The print version is at Amazon. You can also read an interview with Danielle at http://bit.ly/tigerbk. The magnificent book cover is by Marty Norman.

While Western Australia reacts in panic to shark attacks and orders up a shark cull, South Korea does something more imaginative. According to the Yonhap News Agency, ‘South Korea has developed a new shark-repelling device that provides safety to both humans and sharks‌ The device uses solar panels set on top of floating buoys to create a curtain of magnetic fields that is only irritating to sharks‌ Each solar panel creates a magnetic current of less than five volts, which is virtually undetectable to humans or other fish.’
