TheArts ARTIST
KAREN STONE Last year Karen Stone completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts, with honours at Southern Cross University. This year she is presenting her first solo exhibition at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery. The exhibition, poetically entitled I remember when I was small… sitting with Gran…watching flowers on the wall, is a collection of her intriguing artworks formed from pulped fabric. Her fascinating process starts with collecting linen and cotton clothes which she then cuts into tiny pieces and pulps into a fine ‘soup’. The colours of the fabric inform the colour of the pulp, which is fed into squirter-bottles and then painted, Jackson Pollock style, onto large silk screens. As the water drips through the screen the artwork dries into a paper-like fabric. The resulting works are compelling, large-scale representations of flowers – fresh flowers, dying flowers, flowers for all occasions. The pulped clothing is imbued with memory – memories for the wearer, memories of the wearer and a time gone by. “Growing up, flowers were an ever present part of my family life. It wasn’t just in the garden and in pots on tables, they were also inside. Floral patterns were everywhere; on walls, floors, Gran’s frocks and even the crockery” says Karen. Northern Rivers Community Gallery, Ballina from August 14.

SOLARAGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Don’t miss Karen Stone’s (Dunoon) first solo exhibition entitled I remember… Her incredible large-scale depictions of flowers are created from pulped fabric. Melissa Wright’s (Lennox Head) exhibition Frolic sees the artist combine her passion for printmaking, painting and sculpture in a series of compositions depicting women in vintage bathing costumes. Melissa creates plastered boxes into which the images are incised, inked and painted. Andrew Hmelnitsky’s (Byron Bay) exhibition of paintings is called Ballina to the Border… via the Studio. In good weather Andrew paints en plein air using traditional 14th and 15th century Italian painting techniques – including making his own gesso boards and his own paint. When it’s raining he works in his studio painting abstract compositions using ink, acrylic and oil on canvas. The Northern Rivers Community Gallery is located on the corner of Cherry and Crane streets and is open Wednesday to Friday from 10am until 4pm and weekends from 9.30am until 2.30pm. Entry is free. For further details call the Gallery on 6681 6167.
