Good cause for boys and their toys Story & photo Eve Jeffery Now that the Brunswick Valley U3A have their Menshed, they are getting down to the business of repairing and creating several projects for the benefit of the community. Currently the boys are working on different designs for a novelty book shelf that could be used in libraries and other situations that cater for young readers. The basic chassis on wheels was designed by Gerry Gibson and can be made to accommodate a train, boat, car or any number of mobile vehicles. Having made a successful choo choo the fellow’s next unit will be an MG with the books running along the bonnet. Many of the men who belong to the group are grandfathers, so there was much discussion about design ideas with the aim of creating something that would appeal to the very early reading experience of the 2 to 3 year old age group.

The staff at the Brunswick Heads library also has some design ideas that were a great help in the finished product including a ‘skylight’ in the roof so that the reader can see while in the driver’s seat. Shed owner Bruce Mitchell is pleased with the final product and is happy to see his space put to such good

use. ‘We are in a good spot here,’ says Bruce, ‘It’s in a quiet area and the neighbours can’t hear us.’ ‘This is not a mass production line. We are just about making a few items for the community and doing a few small repairs.’ The train, which took about three sessions to build,

was constructed mainly from materials donated by the men from the shed and has been stationed at the Brunswick Heads library for the past week and has already created interest for tots. Children can ride the library train in Bruns on weekdays 10am-5pm and Saturdays 9am-noon.

Bruns Hotel sponsors visitor centre The Brunswick Visitor Centre, which has been operating since 2006, has experienced a financial setback. Despite lack of funding from Council, the centre has blossomed over the last two years into a five to six day per week operation with the assistance of a Work for the Dole Program through Ballina BETC, as well as a dedicated band of community volunteers and goodwill from various community groups and businesses. However, the BETC Work for the Dole program and funding has been recently halved due to decreases in the number of participant referrals through the system. This setback has meant that some stopgap funding or sponsorship and extra volunteer energy and com-

munity goodwill is required in the short term to maintain the services that are being offered. The Hotel Brunswick, which is a generous supporter of many local community organisations and sponsor of community events, has offered to assist with a substantial sponsorship contribution to keep the visitor centre open. This funding will be used to assist with covering the running costs of the visitor centre until other income producing initiatives take off or grants sourced. According to its press release, ‘The Visitor Centre is the engine room for community projects and capacity building, including community events, town website development, activity directories, grant sourcing, “buy

local” initiatives, Simple Pleasures merchandise and the showcasing of locally made products. ‘The centre also provides the only tourism information service for the town and its family oriented visitors, who are welcomed by our friendly staff and volunteers, and encouraged to experience our laidback village lifestyle and values and share the simple pleasures that we have on offer in Bruns.’

New volunteers and program participants are being sought to join the existing team to share their knowledge and love of Bruns with visitors and at the same time have the opportunity to sharpen up or learn new computer or admin skills. If you can spare a few hours a week please contact Carol on 66851003 or email info@ brunswickheads.org.au or pop into the Visitor Centre on Thursdays.

“Dear Tracey, I am writing to thank you for all your wonderful care and attention over the last 12 months. My first VLA test was a wake up call when it showed that my cells were ageing about 10 years older than my birth age! I was shocked as most people thought I looked younger than my 57 years and I thought that I had always eaten well and been proactive with my health. I knew I was carrying excess weight around the middle area of my body but had always been able to dress as to appear thinner. I was becoming increasingly frustrated trying to lose weight as I was eating less and less and still putting on more weight! This is where Tracey’s program become so revolutionary to me as I was able to feel more satisfied and yet I managed to lose 8kgs of body fat and more importantly have kept it off for over 6 months now. Not only have I lost a lot of weight but I feel more energetic and my whole quality of life has improved. I would urge anybody who is serious about creating wellbeing for themselves to try Tracey Lee Morley’s clinic and programs – they will give you a new lease on life. Thanks again. Kind regards Pamela Wright” Pam Wright: ‘I lost 8kg and feel more energetic and my whole quality of life has improved.’ Read Pam’s story online.
