CULTURE THEATRE AUDITIONS AUDITIONS AUDITIONS Firetrax have been entertaining audiences on the North Coast for the last 16 years. For them, creating theatre for kids that is challenging, exciting and fun has been one of their greatest joys. And of course, hearing children laugh. Director Pauline Ranscombe is interested in hearing from anyone who would like to audition for the next production which will be in July. The shows will be held in the Bangalow A&I Hall. Males and females from 18 to 70 years are welcome to audition, or you might like to join the production team and learn about the many aspects of theatre. Anyone interested phone Pauline on 6687 1998
LECTURE MONET MONET MONET... IT’S A RICH MAN’S WORLD ADFAS Byron Bay and District will be hosting a lecture ‘Reviled or Revered: Monet in Paris & London’ presented by Lizzie Darbyshire, who specialises in 19th century British and French art. The lecture will explore Monet’s artistic growth from reviled Impressionist to revered
French artist. The name Claude Monet is well known throughout the art world but how well do people really know his work? Few know about his first views of Paris that include some 12 views of Gare St Lazare, seven of which were exhibited at the 3rd Impressionist Exhibition in 1877. He also painted over 90 canvases of London in the 1900’s, a nostalgic view of the city bathed in light or consumed by fog, including The Thames at Westminster. The lecture will be held on Monday April 14 at the Bangalow Catholic Hall at 7.30pm. Guests are welcome to attend at a cost of $20, which includes supper. If you have always lamented that you just can’t meet brainy people into the Impressionist movement, now’s your chance baby.
PERFORMANCE CATCHING THE WAVE The Shearwater Steiner school is happy to again present a Wearable Arts Vision in Education. The theme for this year 2008 is ‘Alchemia’ with the focus on transformation. Alchemy in short means, turning base metal into gold. Everyday materials and day-to-day human interrelationships and their responses become the ingredients for the creative
crucible from which magical art pieces emerge. The show is scheduled for May 7 – 10 and tickets can be bought by calling 6684 3223.
ART WAYWOOD HARMONY The story behind this Waywood exhibition is quite lovely. Already a long time friend of Indonesian artist Muhammad Bundhowi, local artist Anna NiblicHeggie met Sandra Philips in Bali in 2002 during a cultural exchange. Her initial enthusiasm at the reception in Indonesia was soon replaced by utter dismay when the bombings occurred the night she left Bali for Java. Bundhowi, who helped the police in identifying the corpses of friends and neighbours, had a even more deeply disturbing experience. And so, in mutual sadness and frustration, the three artists began what was to become an endless exchange of emails on reconnection, global peace, cultural understandings, the role of the artist, etc... These exchanges, over time, grew into a project involving the three artists. It’s an exhibition which has been an evolving one, not unlike their works in which photography, mixed media and collage offer very original
The work of local artist Ken Johnson will be known to many visitors to the Tweed River Art Gallery. Susi Muddiman, Director says, ‘As an artist of national significance, it is fitting that Tweed River Art Gallery host an exhibition surveying forty years of Ken Johnson’s practice. Ken is an artist who is driven and energetic. Since an early age he has been a gatherer of information and an explorer. Having commenced painting at a very early age, his curiosity and thirst for knowledge has led him to investigate the cultures and landscapes of the world. Each of these journeys have contributed to his work, each expedition weaving in a new aesthetic to his practice. When Ken travels with his family, he sets up house, settles in and interacts with the community – absorbing the new culture, which in turn influences his style and technique, imbuing his work with a taste of the richness of his adopted ethnicity. His eye for detail is evidenced in his depiction of the minutiae of his environments – thus we are treated to his skilfully rendered depictions of peeling paint, fissures in concrete and tracks in the sand.’ Although Ken is primarily known as a painter, this exhibition also showcases drawings, photography and sculpture. Open Spaces / Other Places: a 40 year survey is a timely exhibition, and one that the Tweed River Art Gallery is very pleased to present. His extraordinary retrospective is on show for the next six weeks.

JUST JIMBO AT COMEDY CAFE Standup comedian Jimbo is something of an enigma. For a start he’s a standup comedian who’s also good looking. He’s a modern day swagman, a comedian who has taken his craft to the road. He’s a country boy who packed up his car and decided that instead of waiting for gigs to come to him, he would go to them.
