Kite festival planned for Lennox Jann Gilbert As a child g rowing up in Holland Deborah Grea tbatch has many happy memories of fl ying kites with her father. So when she and husband Philip recently emigrated from the UK to the North Coast with their tw o young children and they couldn’t find a kite shop they just knew they had to open one. ‘Kite flying is such g reat fun for everyone; kids, adults, teenagers, all the f amily. There’s so much open space here.We have people coming in saying, “I want to get my son away from the computer” so they get a kite to get them outdoors. It’s a fun, healthy thing to do ,’ says Deborah. Since opening Cool Breeze Kites in Lennox Head only a month ago Deborah and Philip have enjoyed seeing more people discover the joy of kite flying, and they’d like to see it become a f amiliar part of the landscape on the North Coast. ‘We want to start planning for a kite festiv al on Good Friday this y ear. It’s traditional in Holland to fl y kites on Good Fr iday and w e’d love to see it become part of the lifestyle here,’ says Deborah. ‘We’d like to get the local schools and the com-

It’s easy, you just need to know how,’ says Deborah. ‘We’re happy to help. Hospitality munity involved as w ell as tourists. ‘The aim is for young and old to make their o wn kites and fly them on the beach at Lennox. A competition for the most interesting design, with a gold coin donation as entry fee, would raise funds for local community organisations like the pla ygroup and the surf lifesa ving club, and we’ll donate one of our beautiful kites to the winners

in each age ca tegory. The festival would also allo w other community organisations to raise funds through food stalls or a sausage sizzle.’ As a prelude to the kite festival Deborah and Philip are organising a kite fl ying training session on the beach in front of the playground on Thursday January 17 at 4pm (weather permitting!). Depending upon the

Byron Youth Service is conducting a free hospitality skills course from February 12 to April 24. The course will require a commitment of three days a week for ten weeks and is open to an y young person who is unemployed and betw een 15-24 years of age.
