Concerns over raw sewerage outfall in the Brunswick River ‘It’s been going on for years. Council have already spent a seven figure amount and they still haven’t resolved the issue.’ According to the committee the major problem is the amount of stormwater being processed through the pumping station, in addition to the age and condition of the pipe work and the consequences of inflow and infiltration. ‘When it rains stormwater flows into the sewerage system and is processed at the pumping station along with the sewerage,’ says Malcolm. ‘There’s also infiltration from groundwater into the
sewerage pipes, which is also processed along with the sewerage. Once the pumping station is full the emergency outlet is activated and that triggers the outfall of raw sewerage into the river,’ he says. Given that plans are well underway for the new Vallances Road treatment plant the committee feels that something must be done to halt the recurrent outfalls into the river while the plant is still in the planning stages. ‘The only eventual solution is to replace all the earthenware sewerage pipes in Mullumbimby with a seamless plastic piping so
that there’s nothing going into them apart from sewerage,’ says Malcolm. ‘It’s ludicrous to spend $40 million on a new treatment plant that uses onethird to one-half of its capacity to process stormwater. If the pipes in Mullum aren’t replaced it’s a total waste of money. It’s an outrage.’ The committee believes that residents need to be made aware of the problem and that Council needs to address the issue in consultation with the community. ‘We are not happy,’ says Malcolm. ‘Council has to get this right.’

A T-shirt by any other name… Often underestimated, the humble T-shirt has become a messenger for everything from brands to political slogans. But given that the first to wear what was essentially underwear on the outside are also well-known for their tough, rebellious nature, its place in human culture as a statement of the wearer is not so surprising. Originally US Army issue underwear, the T-shirt was designed to provide a bit of respite from the heavy and scratchy woollen army uniforms, and it also meant that in warmer climates servicemen could ditch their jackets and get around in their underwear, so to speak. It was the bad boys of stage and screen, however, who made the T-shirt what it is today when Marlon Brando, James Dean and John Wayne all shocked the 1950s public by wearing their underwear on TV. Remembering of course that this was an era in television history when not even married people could appear in bed together, wearing your underwear on the outside

was considered very risqué. Today the T-shirt (in some form or other) comprises part of possibly every wardrobe on the planet, and often provides a glimpse of the wearer’s political persuasions or passions. With so many T-shirt clad bodies getting around town it seemed only fair to give this iconic fashion item the respect it rightly deserves.

Jann Gilbert Waste Water Advisory Committee member, Malcolm Murray and fellow committee members are extremely concerned about the continued outfall of sewerage into the Brunswick River. The committee reports that as little as 25 millimetres of rain can trigger the outfall. ‘Whenever we get a small amount of rain we get raw sewerage running into the river at an urban boat ramp at the eastern end of Heritage Park near the Ross Industrial Estate. It’s coming from the pumping station located nearby,’ says Malcolm.
