FRIDAY 23

THURSDAY 22

WEDNESDAY 21

1. Saturday night it all ends. Not just six interminable weeks of the election campaign, but according to all the polls here also ends eleven years of Howard’s reign. All the channels have election specials, with the ABC leading in commitment with six straight hours. Channel Nine has forgotten that it’s no longer The One, and has scheduled five hours in the tally room. Other stations are less generous, and Channel Ten will drop in for just an hour at 10pm long after the result has been broadcast from everywhere else. 2. Never mind, at least Ten will screen a good alternative in the best of the first Star Wars series (and therefore the best, period). The Empire Strikes Back (7.30pm) was made after the first movie gave Lucas the wherewithal to go for broke on expensive special effects, and before the series got all cute with Ewoks and the like. It also benefits from the absence of his wooden direction: Irvin Kershner took over and treated the material seriously as drama. It ends on a cliffhanger, which god willing the election will not.
