Site chosen for new Byron hospital North Coast Area Health Service Chief Executive Chris Crawford last week announced that agreement has been reached for the purchase of a six hectare parcel of land for the construction of the new Byron Shire Central Hospital. The land is at Ewingsdale, on the southern side of Ewingsdale Road, near the intersection of the PaciďŹ c Highway. Mr Crawford said, ‘Contracts have been exchanged and settlement is conditional on approval for subdividing the larger lot of which it is a part and the subsequent rezoning of the land for hospital purposes. The relatively large portion of land will allow for future expansion and also enable a signiďŹ cant vegetation buffer between the hospital development and surrounding properties. ‘The development will have no impact on the agricultural/horticultural activities currently being carried out on the northern side of Ewingsdale Road. ‘The acquiring of an appropriate site for Byron Shire Central Hospital follows an extensive process of community consultation and service planning. hospital will play a key role in delivering ďŹ rst class health services to the north coast’s fast-growing population. Mr Crawford said services to be provided at the new hospital include: 54 inpatient beds; an around-theclock emergency department; access to public and private surgical services; palliative care; specialty paediatric services; a strong emphasis on maternity services, in keeping with local needs; day rehabilitation services; a range of commu-

nity health services, and both on the campus and in the community. Member for Ballina Don Page has welcomed the announcement. ‘It’s pleasing to see a site has been acquired after such a long wait and that the hospital is a step closer to becoming a reality,’ Mr Page said. Mr Page said it was imperative the project continued to progress quickly to ensure the new hospital could be up and running as soon as possible. ‘It is important that

construction commences sooner rather than later so we can minimise the time taken to open the doors to this new health facility. ‘The Byron Shire Central Hospital is part of the “one coastal hospital with two campuses� concept that will maximise the health services available to the whole coastal community. Clarkes Beach CafĂŠ dished up to Kirkwoods The Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly, has announced local company, Scapta Pty Ltd, as the preferred proponent for the re-establishment of the Clarkes Beach CafĂŠ in Byron Bay. The directors of Scapta, Ben and Belinda Kirkwood, current owners of Dish Restaurant and Raw Bar, said, ‘We are really excited about being given this opportunity. There is still a way to

go before things move forward at pace... at this stage we are just excited about the concept for this site. We are keen to bring about a cafĂŠ that is fairly mainstream in style, but a bit edgy too... something that everyone can enjoy. ‘It is such an iconic site, a really special place, so everyone has an opinion on how it could be best used. Despite a public desire for a cafĂŠ to

be up and running as quickly as possible, we feel it is vital that this reestablishment is done right. ‘Improvements need to be made to the site in order to set it up for the long term. We hope to weatherproof it too so customers can enjoy it all year round, and for many years to come.’ Mr Kelly said a strong ďŹ eld, consisting of local and interstate parties, competed

for the opportunity to reestablish the cafĂŠ. Mr Kelly said, ‘An evaluation panel, including an independent industr y expert, reviewed proposals and recommended Scapta as the preferred proponent.’ The government anticipates that, following site refurbishment, business operations will recommence around mid 2007.
