So, I caved. After nearly ten years of holding out under extreme duress my children wore me down. I just couldn’t take it any more. The decade long chorus of: ‘I want a puppy! I want a puppy! Pleeeease Mum, I need a puppy. Everyone else has a puppy! I am the only girl at school who doesn’t have a puppy! You had a puppy when you were a kid! What kind of childhood is it, without a puppy?’ I couldn’t stand it. The mother guilt was too much. What if my selfish decision to remain a dog-free household had a long term impact on my kiddies? What if the lack of puppy meant that they would never find love? Never be able to commit? Never feel truly successful and content in life? Never knew the horror of their favourite shoes being chewed to oblivion? What if they missed out the daily responsibility of picking up poo and ended up adults who couldn’t deal with their shit? What if they always felt they had missed out? What if they looked back on their life and said: ‘It was

It is easy to grumble about the state of the arts in Australia. Like the fact that the Government encourages sport over artistic pursuits. Or that most artists and musicians spend their life in poverty and never receive the recognition they deserve. Last Tuesday’s Dolphin Awards was a fantastic antidote to all of this. Judging by the full house at the Beach Hotel last Wednesday, The Northern Rivers music industry is a vibrant community brimming with talent that could be found anywhere on the planet. As an industry night, it recognised local musicians and related industries with thousands of dollars worth of prizes and trophies awarded to 21 categories. Local bands such as Marshall and the Fro, Brittle and The Love Bus all showcased, while awards were given to Sara Tindley (best album), Colin Bullock (song of the year), Judd Brennand (best male vocal), and Sita Ram Lounge, Rachel Zinman and Subway Bhaktis (best

a perfect childhood, except, I never had a (sob), puppy!’ What if the end result was that my daughters ended up dating men who behaved like dogs? Toad rolling root rats who licked their balls and humped the furniture. (Yep, Liberal voters). So now we have a puppy. I’ll admit, she’s damn cute. But geez, it’s a lot more hands on than the three now dead guinea pigs. I just moved the cage and dug the odd hole. Last night was like having a baby. Poor little darling cried all night. So I had to pat her and say soothing things like ‘Nice doggie. Good doggie. Tired doggie.’ I mean how do you put a dog to sleep? I tried singing ‘You ain’t nothing but a hound dog...crying all the time’, ‘How much for that doggie in the window’ and the Iggy Pop classic: ‘I want to be your dog.’ But that just seemed cruel. There’s the controlled crying thing you do with infants, but I never had the heart for that. I was the Mum that took the baby to bed and breastfed it to sleep. Have you ever tried to

female vocal). Commonly, long nights like these can drag on and fortunately it did not lose focus or pace. Congratulations to all the organisers (the food was fantastic), and to those who participated and won. Next years Dolphin Awards will undoubtedly be even bigger.

JIMMY & JACKIE Brisbane based Jackie Marshall stars at Jimmy Willing’s newly reopened ‘Live in Hillbilly Heaven’ with special guest Uncle Burnin Love, The Black Train and Jimmy and his Real Gone Hick-Ups. Jackie is best described as an improvising songwriter as she plays various guitars and sings both solo acoustic and with a 5 piece. She is a diverse diva. Check her and the hillbillies at the Winsome Hotel in Lismore on Saturday.

LOG ON TO COG Sydney trio Cog have been making a major impact on the Australian rock scene since the release of their 2005 seminal debut The New Normal. Cog isn’t driven by clouded hype, but is a band that has

get a pup to latch on? They’ve got some pretty sharp teeth. On an upnote, I seem to have some new piercings. And what’s with poo training? I’m glad to hear that you don’t rub their little noses in it, although that worked a treat for my kids. Now you celebrate the poo. I’m in the backyard going ‘Good girl what a great poo.’ I mean I’m all for positive reinforcement, but noone has ever said that to me. Anyway, the puppy is doing the trick. When we brought her home my daughter said ‘I love you Mum. I love you Dad.’ Two hours later, while still basking in the glow of the kind of love you can only get from kids with gifts, my daughter pipes up. ‘I want a pony. Can I have a pony. I need a pony. Pleeease, I’m the only girl in my class who doesn’t have a ponnnnieee.’ So, I caved. The pony arrives next week. Think of how much more love I am going to get! And they call it..’pony looove.’

grown organically through performing exhilarating live shows backed up with critically acclaimed review and major airplay. Cog play the Hotel Great Northern on Saturday.

GRABBING A RABBIT BY THE FOOT Singer/songstress and cerebral siren Gyan teams up with Leunig to present one of the most beautiful and exciting artistic collaborations of the year. Billy The Rabbit shows just what a clever girl can do with a clever boy’s poetry. Gyan has put these poignant, funny, touching and dark reflections to music. While Gyan and her band sings the songs from this exquisite album, Leunig himself will be supplying the drawings. Simply divine. Saturday 28 October at the Byron Community Centre: Tix available at the box office: 6685 5659.

LUCINDA LUCINDA Lucinda Peter’s songs cover a broad range of stylistic approaches from the folkinfluenced melodic tones of her intimate song Kiss to the more atmospheric spatial experience of Desert Stars. She’s the whole package – the voice, the package, the double bass playing and damn it if she ain’t one hell of a songwriter! Byron

Ben plays to support his new album Spooky Fun at the Hotel Great Northern on Friday.
