Mullum futsal champs in rep team Eight boys from Byron Shire competed in the Futsal Far North Coast Representative team that last weekend were crowned the Under-11 Futsal Champions of south-east Queensland for 2012. This is the first time a NSW team has won the Championship in any junior age division. All of the boys, Jarrah HallHart, Zak Sezer, Alex Fourcard-Roptig, Ethan Zikhron, Dylan Baker, Marc Starrett (gk), Kurt Ruehe and Callum Wilson play their club Futsal in Mullumbimby in competing teams. A year’s worth of intense training under Brazilian mentor/coach Vinicius Leite and assistant coach Tim Knight paid off when the team found their top form, thrashing their arch-rival, the elite rep Brisbane City team 7–3, after relaxing off from a dominant 5–0 lead at half-time. The grand final was the cul-

sal trainers under director of coaching Vini Leite give FutsalFNC teams an edge despite the relatively small pool of potential players to choose from on the NSW north coast compared to regions like Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. Remarkably though, more than 100 players currently compete in the Mullumbimby High School hall on a weekly basis from U8s to men’s with many hundreds more from the six other FutsalFNC centres in the far north coast region. FutsalFNC expects a huge increase in futsal interest in Byron Bay itself when the new Byron Sports Centre at Ewingsdale finally opens its two deluxe indoor courts to competition in a few weeks. Meanwhile the young champion players from Mullumbimby are setting their sights on their next goal: NSW state championships, and are looking forward to their next two-hour training session with their beloved coach Vini.
