These independent volunteer radio stations offer interesting alternatives to the Bieber/Gaga/Perry monotony. CHIRP CHIRP radio is a project that gives listeners “surprise and variety,” says Shawn Campbell, 42, one of many volunteers on the board at CHIRP. “We have a commitment to local music and to music released independently,” Campbell says. “Some of it you’ll know, most of it you won’t.” The DJs are encouraged to think creatively about what they play.
