LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

educating and empowering the ethical leaders of tomorrow

With a clear mission that has remained unchanged since Felix Adler founded the school 137 years ago, Ethical Culture Fieldston’s highest purpose is to educate and empower the ethical leaders of tomorrow. We do this through a creative, rigorous curriculum that marries skill-building with critical thinking and learning-by-doing. Our faculty lead the way in progressive education and all that it entails: creative vigor, interdisciplinarity, service learning, global perspectives, and multiculturalism. In alignment with the collective long-term goals of our Strategic Plan, we are re-envisioning the school’s progressive educational roots to meet the demands of the 21st century. Concurrently, we are working to revitalize Felix Adler’s ethical imperative to ensure that it is manifest in all that we do, as well as nurturing and sustaining our resources, both human and material.

As we settle into another academic year, it is fitting to reflect on the accomplishments of the past 12 months to provide inspiration for the future. We have made great strides in the past year, and I want to express my gratitude for your generous support in making them possible. Building on the positive momentum of our achievements, we are well-positioned for the year ahead. I hope you will partner with us as we plan for a promising future.

Damian J. Fernandez, Ph.D. Head of School

message from the board of T R U S T E E S

THANKS TO OUR GENEROUS COMMUNITY

Dear Members of the ECFS Community, Looking back on the 2014-2015 school year, we are deeply appreciative of all that this community has accomplished. As this report highlights, our school is in excellent financial health thanks to thoughtful budgeting by our administrative team, attentive stewardship from our Finance and Investment Committees of the Board, and the generosity of parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends. We have made meaningful progress to implement our Strategic Plan. In November 2014, the Board of Trustees approved capital projects to advance the programmatic goals of the Plan. These projects include the Fieldston Lower Adler Lab, renovation of the Tate Library, and longer term plans to develop new space for interdisciplinary work on the Fieldston campus and Robert A. improvements to the Ethical Culture building.

Also over the last year, the Board implemented extensive changes to its governance practices, including moving from a co-chair to a single chair of the Board, imposing term limits on Board tenure, and electing a total of 11 new Trustees for the new year. We finished our term as co-chairs in June 2015 and welcome our successor, Caryn SeidmanBecker. Caryn is the parent of three ECFS students and has served with distinction in numerous leadership positions on the Board. We thank all of the donors listed on the pages of this Annual Report for your contribution of time, work, and resources to further our school's mission.

DONORS TO THE

ECFS Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is a vital source of support for ECFS and is a way for alumni, parents, and friends to sustain and advance the school’s mission. Gifts made to the Annual Fund are unrestricted and provide the school with the greatest gift of all: flexibility. Through your generosity, ECFS is able to provide financial aid to students, opportunities for faculty development, funds to improve technology, additional support for co-curricular activities, and improvements to our campuses.

ECFS relies on the support of our generous donors, and we are so grateful to those parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends who participate in the life of our school. Throughout

this Annual Report, you will notice an oak tree next to the names of our Loyal Oaks, indicating those who have contributed to the Annual Fund for 10 or more consecutive years. We have “branched out” to the Acorns, and are honoring donors who have contributed to the Annual Fund for five or more consecutive years. At Homecoming each fall, we host a special recognition brunch for all Loyal Oaks to thank them for their support.

Please know that every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of donor lists. However, errors do occur, and we wish to apologize for any inconvenience they may cause. Volunteer with us PARENTS Parent Annual Fund Volunteer Effort (PAVE) Together we can PAVE the way to ensure the success of our school, and inform the community about the impact of philanthropy at ECFS. Volunteers are needed to connect with parents to reach our goal of 100% parent participation in the Annual Fund. This is a great way to build relationships with the families in your grade/division and get to know the ECFS community. The ECFS Annual Benefit Each year, our community of parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends gather to support and celebrate the school at the annual benefit, raising more than $1 million for the ECFS Annual Fund and financial aid. The event would not be possible without the tireless work of countless parent volunteers. Benefit co-chairs, Tom Friedman (FL) and Tania Min (EC), invite you to join them and help make this year’s benefit on Saturday, March 12, 2016, another successful event. Form VI Gift Committee Is this your child’s senior year? Join the Form VI Gift Committee and be part of the effort to leave a legacy that honors the class of 2016. For more information about any of the committees or how to get involved, please contact Meghana Nene, Assistant Director, Parent Giving, at (212) 712-6245 or mnene@ecfs.org.
