CULTIVATING TASTE As the children

are growing and playing in the sunshine, we ensure they receive vitamins throughout their camp days ? our war m and wonder ful chefs make sauce tomate daily, mixing pureed or ganic vegetables with fresh tomatoes. For le goรปter water melon and summer fr uits are on the menu. There is no better time to eat well than childhood when tastes are developing and bodies and minds for ming. By making their own treats, the children become invested in their health and responsibility to the group on a deeper level.

Handmade pop sickles that cool on a summer camp day are sweeter when shared. 11 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

ART and NATURE: CERAMICS Ar tist Svetlana Durel introduces the magic of shaping the natur al world with clay.

12 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

Cer amics

classes throughout the summer have focused on the cr afting of ar t through nature. Children shape clay to resemble the cacti of a deser t, creating bees, birds & butter flies and painting with the r ainbow. Svetlana began as an ar tist at the same age as the children she has been teaching at ECF?s

Summer Camp by the Sea. ?It really shaped me as a human being.? She explains the joy in seeing the children begin to under stand the process of working with their hands, which they love. In her cer amics class they under take the creative endeavor of manipulating a soft piece of clay into a finished design. ?They tr ansfor m it into their

own,? she descr ibes the creative license the children are able to take with the designs. They push beyond what has been laid out before them. ?It?s inspir ing to me as an ar tist.? Svetlana will be retur ning to Ecole Claire Fontaine as a studio teacher in the autumn season. See you in September!

GARDENING

The Food Web in Our Garden

Garden creatures need sun and water ; insects and snails like to eat leaves. The plants need that same sun and water, along with nutr ients in the soil that can come from old leaves. The children see dur ing their work in the garden that all of the elements, plants and cr itter s, work together. Some big insects eat smaller insects. Wor ms eat dead leaves The children carefully tr ansplant sprouts and birds eat the wor ms. Birds from tiny pots into lar ger, or into the also dr ink the nectar of flower s, ground, so that their roots may spread. as do the bees. What do giant squash need to grow? "Soil, sunshine, water and love!"

GEOLOGY

Dur ing

Summer Camp the children were treated to Fr iday mor ning Geology classes with Michael Lawson, Ph.D. The ECF parent is a geologist and space scientist cur rently working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Labor ator y on the Mar s 2020 Rover. This summer he taught camper s about cr ystals, erosion, mountains and rocks. Gr aham cr acker s illustr ated the fitting and shifting of tectonic plates. 16 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

Dr. Lawson demonstr ates and explains the phenomenon of erosion. Using magnifying glasses, the children study cr ystals and rocks. A sandbox with water becomes the dior ama of an eroding mountain for ming a reef. Jellyfish

Made of colored tissue paper, glue & translucent shells that shimmer in the sunshine

Projects at Ecole Claire Fontaine connect the natur al world to daily activities, creating a depth of appreciation and under standing that grow with the children. Ar t and nature inter sect by using treasures from the nearby beach. From our frequent walks, shells of clams, mussels, snails and sand dollar s make their way back to the campuses in sandy pockets. For the giant jellyfish created by the children and sister- teacher s Astr id and Emilie, the most delicate, pale shells are cr ushed to create its center. 20 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

Tissue paper in blue, green and the color of sky evoke the sea bed of the Pacific, the world's lar gest ocean and our dear neighbor. Shells are glued in place as a fr ame. The jellyfish por tr ait is hanging outside where the tr anslucent shells shimmer in the sunshine. This sandy summer will be remembered by the creations that the children linked to many of the elements that sur round them on the beach - sand, sea, shells and sun.
