Vernacular Architecture In

Architecture class with Mar ina and Genesis, the children lear n about designs from around the world. Dur ing a study on ver nacular architecture, students painted and sculpted Afr ican huts made of thick paper. Outside in the garden they built with their teacher s a hut made of bamboo. By pr acticing Ver nacular Architecture, students lear n about design based on local needs, availability of constr uction mater ials and the reflection of local tr aditions.

Water : Controlling the Right to Live

In

honor of the precar ious situation of our world?s water, the children consider its vital impor tance on a daily basis. Conser vation effor ts are pr acticed dur ing hand washing and while water ing the garden. At Ecole Claire Fontaine effor ts are geared toward recognizing the imper ative need for vigilance around our water sources as this life- giving force is under siege.

Children Ponder Water

Questions are posed... The children find answer s...

Upon

contemplating the cr ucial value of water, students in Elodie's Philosophy class have concluded the following: We need to be nice and kind with water to stay alive. Water is power ful. You cannot stop the water. Water is helpful; it?s the mom of the ear th. We love the water !

Where do you find water?

In

the sea, ocean, r iver and bathroom. In r ain, ice, steam, tear s, clouds, shower s, pools and sinks. On our body when we sweat. In the kitchen, in a cup, a hose and sometimes on the floor !

Why do we need water?

To stop the fire! To wash our

hands

and our selves. To cook. To keep us alive because if there is no more water, the plants don?t make oxygen and we cannot breath anymore. To feed the plants, flush the toilets and hydr ate our bodies!

How can we save the water?

We can put buckets outside when it is r aining and collect the water to feed the plants. Don?t leave the water r unning ? tur n off the water quickly. Don?t stay too long under the shower and get out when you are done. Using water with responsibility! Bravo, les enfants.

Flight of the Butterflies Wildlife Gardening The

children love to r aise butter flies! Beginning at the embr yonic stage, their wings have taken flight. The milkweed planted in our gardens creates an inviting open door. The children discovered that there are four stages in the metamor phosis of butter flies: Fir st the eggs are laid on plants, which will soon become ver y hungr y cater pillar s as they enter the feeding stage. With white or yellow petals and a yellow center, the daisy conveys loyal love, innocence and pur ity.

It is also a great keeper of the sweetest secrets. Given between fr iends the message expressed by the daisy is, ?Your secrets are safe with me.?
