ARTIST TAHNEE LONSDALE For the month of Mother's Day we highlight artist Tahnee Lonsdale. a Figurative Colorist whose paintings border on the Surreal. Website: http://tahneelonsdale.com Instagram: @tahneelonsdale

M other s

are the source of life and protector s of spir its. While celebr ated they are also expected to be all things within a single moment. Women cr y, laugh and create within these confines. Tahnee Lonsdale uses color s, figures and wit to embody this sense. This Ecole Claire Fontaine mother ?s paintings are vivid in both color and subject matter. Beginning with an object, Tahnee

creates a sculpture, photogr aphs it, and then paints from there. She uses greens and pinks from fleshy to flower y, and evocative reds and yellows. Tahnee's Inglewood studio is the bir thplace of figur ative paintings that border on sur real. The figures she paints are mostly women, with fur niture symbolizing their domesticity. ?I began to see discarded fur niture like women in for m, slightly

abandoned.? Tahnee descr ibes moving from London to Los Angeles as a time that clar ified the direction of her work. ?It?s getting better now that I know what I want to say. Some people know r ight away but it took me a while to figure it out.? With her work having shown in galler ies in Edinbur gh, London and New York, we at ECF are hoping to see a show in a Los Angeles location as well. Continued on page 12

With much of the hobnobbing and hustle of the ar t world frequently belonging to those available to attend evening shows, Tahnee says humorously, ?We?ve got kids; all the hustling has to be done around bath and bed.? 12 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

TAHNEE LONSDALE'S STUDIO It was being at home with her children that really brought out her centr al themes of domesticity, gender roles and feminism. While her children themselves are not often directly

por tr ayed in her paintings, they have been bor rowed from. ?I sometimes use Rudy?s old plastic food to represent maleness ? the meat and the sausages,? she adds with the wit that penetr ates her work. End

OUR WORLD THE BLUE PLANET For the love of Earth

The children work to stand up for Ear th as it hosts our ver y lives. How do we do it? Clean- up the beach,. recycle and no more plastic str aws! In Philosophy class students looked at the globe and talked about the differences in the ear th and its elements 16 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

? air, land and sea. Why is the Ear th refer red to as the ?Blue Planet?? Because of the oceans! Here at Ecole Claire Fontaine we live next to the planet's lar gest ocean, containing more than half of the world's water. While the continents are vast, all of them could fit into

the 59 million square miles of the Pacific basin. In class the children placed model animals into the three categor ies based on their habitat. Among the discover ies were the compatibility of fur for land animals and how the slipper y scales of fish slide well through the water. Ear th Day ar t featured por tr aits and clay models of our beautiful blue planet.

FOR THE LOVE OF GARLIC J'adore l'ail! I love garlic! It issooo yummy! I just want a cup of Salsa please. I could take a bath in thissauce!

At

Ecole Claire Fontaine children love to eat Sauce Tomate, affectionately known at lunchtime as Salsa. It is red, spicy, war m and wonder ful. While the recipe is secret, we can share a fundamental health tip ? garlic. Studies (and life exper ience) show us that garlic can help 18 ECOLE CLAIRE FONTAINE

boost our immune systems and keep us feeling better with antioxidants, miner als and vitamins. With 11 miner als, a small clove includes calcium, iron, manganese, selenium, phosphor us and potassium. Among its 14 vitamins, garlic has B1, B6 and C. It also contains fiber, carbohydr ates, and a

little protein. The children eat it most days atop their couscous, pasta and r ice - as much as possible, as often as possible To your own secret sauce, remember to add loads of tomatoes and all the vegetables you grow and love. "Cette Sauce Tomate est très, très bonne."
