Typical houses.

An image of Santana often included in the tourism advertising of Madeira is the typical house with straw rooftop and nicely coloured façades, doors and windows. There are three types of these houses. One is the house of “empena”, with beams leaning directly on the floor and an inverted V-shaped rooftop. The house of “meio-fio” results from an innovation introduced in the 20th century, whereby the rooftop does not touch the floor because it rests on a special wooden platform. Later, this supporting structure, as well as the façade (“empena”) began to be built in stone or concrete. Both kinds of houses have a three-sided roof and a façade where the door and the small windows with the characteristic coloured blinds are located. The third type is the round or four-sided house. Although it can be found in other places in Santana, it is typical of São Jorge. Despite its name, it is a rectangular house with a four-sided roof with rounded corners and with excellent carpentry of windows, sliding shutters and raised walls.
