Enter the Server Information With SoftChalk 6 and higher, you can publish your SoftChalk lesson to Blackboard while you are in SoftChalk. Entering your server information within SoftChalk authenticates your access to Blackboard. Once you enter your server information, you can choose File/Publish Lesson within SoftChalk to publish your lessons to Blackboard. (This Publish Lesson method has fewer steps than packaging your lesson in a .zip format and uploading your lesson to Blackboard.) You only have to enter your server information one time for each computer that you use. (You do NOT have to do the steps below for each course; just each computer.) IMPORTANT: Your Blackboard administer must install a SoftChalk building block for the File/Publish Lesson method to work. This SoftChalk Blackboard Building Block for Blackboard administrators is found on our website at http://support.softchalk.com. (If you cannot find the SoftChalk Publish link mentioned in the following steps, please contact your Blackboard administrator to have him/her install the SoftChalk Blackboard Building Block.)

In Blackboard: Copy the Access Code 1. Log into your Blackboard account. Select your course from the My Courses list. 2. At the left, click Tools or Course Tools (see below). (If you do NOT see Tools or Course Tools, you may need to make your tools menu available under the Control Panel/Customization/Tool Availability. Scroll down to Tools Area and select all the checkboxes.)

Publish a Lesson – ScoreCenter Format Please read Types of Packaging Formats if you’re not sure whether to use the standard zip format, ScoreCenter format or SCORM 2004 format. Please also read Students Accessing Your Lesson for supported browsers. As previously mentioned, we recommend the ScoreCenter format over the SCORM 2004 format because you can get more detailed information and have more options. To use the ScoreCenter Format: •

You must have SoftChalk 6.05.01 or higher. (To check your version within SoftChalk, go to the Help menu at the top and choose About SoftChalk. To check for updates within SoftChalk, go to the Help menu at the top at the top and choose Check for Updates. Notice there is a checkbox to automatically notify you of updates.)

You must set up your server information. For details on entering your access code, see the section Enter the Server Information. (If you had a previous access code and published previously, you will NOT need to get a new access code.)

Your Blackboard Administrator must have installed the latest SoftChalk 6 ScoreCenter Building Block and enabled the ScoreCenter feature for your Blackboard server. This building block is available at: http://support.softchalk.com. If you not sure whether your Blackboard administrator has installed this building block and enabled the ScoreCenter feature, you can follow the steps for publishing (see the section below In SoftChalk: Publish a Lesson in the ScoreCenter Format). If the ScoreCenter item is disabled, then please contact your Blackboard administrator.

In SoftChalk: Assign Points to Each QuizPopper and Activity 1. IMPORTANT: Within your lesson in SoftChalk, be sure to assign points to each QuizPopper and Activity. (In the main editing window of your SoftChalk lesson, right-click on the QuizPopper or Activity and choose Modify QuizPopper or Modify Activity. Go to the Options tab and use the Points dropdown menu to assign points.)

In SoftChalk: Publish a Lesson in the ScoreCenter Format 1. Start SoftChalk if it is not already open. Open a lesson you want to publish (File/Open) or start a new lesson (File/New) and save this lesson. 2. If your publish window is not already open, choose File/Publish Lesson. The Publish tab at the top should be selected if you have entered server information. (If you have NOT entered server information, see the section Enter the Server Information.) Publish a Lesson - SCORM 2004 Format Please read Types of Packaging Formats if you’re not sure whether to use the standard zip format, SCORM format or ScoreCenter format. Blackboard 9.0 and Blackboard 9.1 does NOT support the SCORM 1.2 format. IMPORTANT: As mentioned previously, if you have the latest update for SoftChalk (SoftChalk 6.05.01 or higher), we recommend that you use the ScoreCenter format instead of the SCORM 2004 format. See the section Publish a Lesson – ScoreCenter Format. IMPORTANT: Macintosh users accessing Blackboard 9.0 or Blackboard 9.1 SCORM 2004 lessons will NOT have scores reported in the Grade Center. (Blackboard’s current SCORM player has this issue. SoftChalk has reported the issue to Blackboard.) IMPORTANT: SCORM 2004 Content does not work in the latest versions of Blackboard Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 3 (9.1.30151.0) and Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 4 (9.1.40071.3). For details, see the section SCORM Issue with Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 3 and Service Pack 4.

In SoftChalk: Publish a Lesson in the SCORM 2004 Format As mentioned above, if you have the latest SoftChalk update, then we recommend you use the ScoreCenter format. For details, see the section Publish a Lesson - ScoreCenter Format. IMPORTANT: For details on what web browsers are supported with Blackboard 9.0 and Blackboard 9.1, be sure to read the section Students Accessing Your Lesson. (You do NOT need to make any SCORM settings within SoftChalk under the Properties/SCORM Properties menu. These settings are irrelevant to Blackboard 9.0 and Blackboard 9.1.) To Publish as SCORM 2004: •

You must have SoftChalk 5 or SoftChalk 6.

You must set up your server information. For details on entering your access code, see the section Enter the Server Information.

Your Blackboard Administrator must have installed a SoftChalk Building Block. This building block is available at: http://support.softchalk.com.

Revising a Lesson after It Has Been Uploaded into Blackboard If you are using the Publish method, see the section In SoftChalk: Replace an Existing Lesson. Basically, you first remove the lesson in Blackboard (see below). Then you make the changes to the lesson in SoftChalk and package the lesson again. Finally, you upload the lesson. IMPORTANT: When you remove a lesson, be aware that the grades for that lesson remain in the gradebook. (You can delete a lesson column in the gradebook if you want.) When you upload the revised lesson, then your students can re-take this new lesson. In other words, you can’t replace a lesson in Blackboard. You can remove a lesson and upload a revised lesson (which acts like a new lesson as far as the Blackboard grading goes).

In Blackboard: Remove the Lesson 1. In Blackboard, select your course and navigate to your content area. (See In Blackboard: Upload a Standard Zip File of this guide for details on selecting your course.) 2. Once you see your lesson, click the dropdown menu arrow next to it and select Delete (see below).

3. Click Ok to confirm the deletion.

SCORM Issue with Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 3 and Service Pack 4 When Blackboard released its Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 3 (9.1.30151.0) on November 30th, 2010, their SCORM content no longer functions correctly. When content is uploaded as SCORM content, the link to the content produces an error. (All SCORM content whether from SoftChalk or other publishers produces the same error.) The issue has been reported to Blackboard. Blackboard has released a Service Pack 4 (9.1.40071.3) but the issue was still present in this release. With Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 2 and lower, this issue does not occur.

Alternatives to SCORM As mentioned previously, SoftChalk recommends using the ScoreCenter feature versus using SCORM content to collect scores in the Blackboard Grade Center. For details, please see the section Publish a Lesson – ScoreCenter Format. If you choose not to use the ScoreCenter feature mentioned above, then you could use our ScoreTracker feature which allows you to collect student scores and download them in a spreadsheet format. For details, please search on ScoreTracker within the User Guide. To access the User Guide within SoftChalk, go to Help/Help Topics/User Guide. If you use the ScoreTracker feature within your SoftChalk lesson, then you can publish or upload your content in the standard .zip format.
