Spanish culture is infused with vivacity, temperament and energy, and its cocktails are no exception. They capture the essence of this vibrant way of life. With a focus on delicious cuisine, convivial company, and spirited freedom, it’s hardly surprising that Spanish cocktails are an outstanding representation of the rich culture. Sangria is the quintessential Spanish cocktail, and the word itself is a reference to blood due to the dark red colour of the wine. Traditionally, it features tempranillo wine, but you can make it with red, white, or even sparkling wine nowadays.

For a traditional sangria, this six-ingredient recipe cannot be beaten. It’s sweet, dry, and very fruity. The dryness comes from the red wine, while the sweetness is a mix of orange juice, brandy, and brown sugar. As for fruit, this recipe uses oranges and apples. Depending on the season, also toss in some peaches, nectarines, and strawberries.

Tinto de Verano, which means “summer red wine,” is a Spanish favourite, and a very fitting name for this vivacious refreshment. It’s very similar to sangria, except it’s lighter and less boozy.

For this classic, you’ll combine a medium-bodied red wine with fizzy lemonade and a bounty of fruit. Grapefruit, oranges, lemon, and lime are added in wedges, so be sure to wash the rinds. Let them soak up all that boozy deliciousness. This fizzy libation will go flat over time, so don’t prepare too far ahead, or your lively beverage will be flat upon serving.

When choosing beers, make sure to use a light Spanish lager.
