Shire planner will address chamber DISCUSSIONS on Yeppoon's central business district, the Coast's future industrial land, employment and investment trends will be addressed at the Capricorn Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry annual general meeting on Tuesday at The Strand Hotel. Livingstone Shire town planner Bill Gannon will address the meeting and he said on Wednesday, his programme was about future planning for Coast businesses and residents. "Shopping and business needs for the future have to be addressed. We need an analysis of how the business areas are functioning now with regard to parking, delivery of goods and pedestrian traffic," Mr Gannon said. "With input, council can then decide how to

improve the situation and what the design options are for the future. "Our needs for the next 10 years on light, medium and heavy industrial land have to be looked at. We have to create more industrial land at appropriate prices and in the right location. "With regard to employment and investment, we have to support the areas where the Coast is growing, for example construction and retirement," he said. After Mr Gannon's address, he will accept questions from the floor. The meeting is at the Strand Hotel on Tuesday, November 5 at 7pm and the agenda includes the election of officers for 1991/92.

MLA sees threat to Yeppoon rail station in door-to-door deliveries MEMBER for Peak Downs Vince Lester this week said it was necessary for Capricorn Coast residents to unite and fight to keep Yeppoon Railway Station. "I am concerned there is a hidden agenda with the door-to-door delivery of goods unloaded off the rail in Rockhampton and delivered to Yeppoon business houses, totally bypassing the local railway station," Mr :ester said. "The phone number given and material supplied to businesses, is a Rockhampton number and a Brisbane 008 number, if there is a problem. This could mean that customers could become used to dealing direct. "Then the government might decide that the station doesn't service a use and could possibly close, putting great pressure on the

remaining staff to handle the pineapple season. "In addition, it is being suggested that sales from passenger tickets amounting to $120,000 per year could be given over to travel agents, so passengers would have to deal with Rockhampton for ticket sales. "That would then give the Brisbane-based rail authority reasons to perhaps cut back other services supplied through Yeppoon Railway Station," he said. "To help avoid this situation, customers should - at all times - deal through their local station by phoning 39 3914. "Such actions would demonstrate that Coast people are not pawns in a chess game to untimely curtail services to Yeppoon, or perhaps close down the Railway Station at all."

Time to smile; It's that day again! AUSTRALIANS will smile all day today, Friday ... it's Smile for Life day. Life Education organisers hope Australians will smile at each other for the day and buy a happy 'Smile for Life' badge and wear it to support the work of the Life Education Centres. The funds raised from the day are used to take positive health and anti-drug abuse programmes to primary school children throughout Australia. "This is indeed necessary work given that over 25,000 Australians die each year from the results of drug and alcohol abuse and that pn current forecasts one in three deaths will be drug related before the age of 35 years if people

don't change their habits," Capricorn Coast coordinator Dave Larkin said. `Smile for Life' S2 badges are available throughout a range of outlets. Emu Park: Drs Lang surgery, Emu Park Newsagency, Emu Park Videos. Yeppoon: All banks, newsagencies, state and private primary and high schools, pre-schools, pharmacies; GB's; HiLights; BP Yeppoon; Irons Hardware; Yeppoon Hospital. They will also be on sale at the Yeppoon Charity Market on Saturday, October 26 from 7am to 8.30am and then at Savemore Centre from 9am to 1 lam. T-shirts in small (S12) and large ($15) sizes will be on sale at Savemore Centre.

• ABOVE: The pictured barramundi will hopefully help to restock the Coast's fishing grounds. Coral Life Marineland' s Kevin Logan is building up a stock of barramundi ... he said aquaculture is the future.

Fishermen restock own waters A FLEDGLING Capricorn Coast business has started and should eventually reap a harvest for the future. Coral Life Marineland proprietor Kevin Logan and amateur fisherman Paul Vize, have been building up barramundi breeding stock with line caught fish. "These have included males from 56mm to 800mm and females to 950mm. We intend to keep fishing the Fitzroy till Friday midday," Mr Logan said. "Coral Life Marineland at Kinka Beach will have these breeders on display. Our goal is to have fingerlings by the end of December.

"We have several ideas how to market the live fish to plate size - 350mm at about 12 months. The University of Central Queensland has several people who are keen to try a practical application to their theory and help us." Mr Logan said he saw aquaculture as a future direction in marine food lines. "This goes as far as hatching prawns and scallops, then releasing them to grow in Keppel Bay. My excess hatchings will be used to restock local waters," he said. "Maybe people will start to think differently about fishermen when they see that we can restock our own waters."

Saturday 'D-Day' against soft porn when 'fire to blaze across nation'

Keppel Markets

CENTRAL Queensland residents are hoping to light a bonfire against the sale and exhibition of soft pornographic magazines that will rage across the nation, Member for Capricornia Keith Wright said this week."November 2, tomorrow, is 'D Day' in the fight against porn promoters who are targeting young children through magazines and comics in newsagencies, service stations and other retail outlets," campaign sponsor Mr Wright said. "Our campaign is not aimed at stopping adults from buying anything. Its specific objective is to restrict the visibility and accessibility of pornographic matter to children and teenagers. "We are simply asking retailers to put magazines like 'Picture', 'People' and other provocative publications on the top shelves behind 'blinder racks' to prevent the young from seeing the bawdy publications or being able to read them." Mr Wright said a petition would go to State Parliament and would support the personal stand that had been taken by Premier Wayne Goss and other State members on this issue. "Project Choice is all about protecting our kids from soft porn and in the first instance, we are asking retailers to help with this issue voluntarily," he said. "At the same time, we are requesting the State legislature to bring down some rules that would set community standard for the display, promotion and sale of soft pornographic publications. "An FBI study in America has shown that porn promotions are specifically targeting young girls and boys between 13 and 17 years of age." He said locally produced pamphlets were being distributed through the region and citizens were urged to sign a petition tomorrow, Saturday.

QUEENSLAND Adult Retailers Association co-ordinator and Australian Video Industry Association State secretary Colin Edwards visited Central Queensland this week on a tour of adult retailers affected by Government bans on non-violent erotica. "Member for Capricornia Keith Wright is misleading the Central Queensland publicwith his statements about a link between the use of soft core material and sexual violence against women and children," Mr Edwards said. "In fact, world-wide 'studies and research show completely the opposite. That the availability of this material does not have a detrimental effect on those who come into contact with it, but conclusively assists in reducing the sexual crime rate. "With these studies in hand, this association must warn the Central Queensland public that, if you allow Mr Wright to wave his moralistic but uninformed magic wand, you will be in danger of causing a blowout in sexual crime in Central Queensland," he said. "Mr Wright should be dealing with the issues of violence in print, such as restricting the availability of publications such as "Soldier of Fortune", gun magazines and magazines teaching how to be a terrorist or how to commit perfect crimes rather than trying to enforce self-centred moral opinions on a public which does not want it. "The whole issue of censorship in Queensland is becoming ridiculous. Where is this going to stop? They say this is not a civil liberties issue, but more of our rights have been removed in the past two weeks than in any other time since this State government took power," he said'. "The Central Queensland public has the right to make its feelings known on this matter and should not be afraid to stand up and say I am the one who will make my own decisions. I do not want politicians telling me how to run my life."

Pensioner leagues 31 this weekend THE Capricorn Coast's pensioners leagues are 31 years young on Sunday. Yeppoon Pensioners League was formed on the morning of November 3, 1960 and Emu Park Pensioners League in the afternoon of the same day. On the morning of November 3, 1960, a meeting to form a branch of the Queensland section of the Australian Pensioners' League was held in the band rotunda on the Yeppoon main beach. "Who called the meeting and who attended it is unknown," Yeppoon president Bill Shuttlewood said. "The earliest record of the Yeppoon Pensioners League is a minute book starting with a meeting held on December 15, 1964."

Aboriginal Corporation wants artifacts for museum on Coast

-

THE Great Keppel Island and Capricorn Coast Aboriginal Corporation is looking for Aboriginal artifacts to display in an Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Museum to be established on the Coast. "Artifacts given to the corporation will be displayed with a plaque showing the name of the person who returned them," Great Keppel Island and Capricorn Coast Aboriginal Corporation chairman Nellie Richards said this week. "It has been illegal for Europeans to have genuine Aboriginal artifacts in their possession since the Aboriginal Relics Protection Act 1967, came into force. "We are asking for everyone's co-operation to assist in the return of all items. We already have the names of quite a few people who have artifacts in their possession and hope that they will willingly contact us. "It doesn't matter if the artifacts are from another area as we can tell you if they are relevant or not," she said. If you can assist, contact the Great Keppel Island and Capricorn Coast Aboriginal Corporation, 39 1060 or write to Box 908, Yeppoon, 4703.

Twenty-seven members attended the December, 1964, meeting which was presided over by Mrs Lucy Maudsley, who held the position of president until the 1967 annual meeting when she was succeeded by Mr Bill Found, who died in office in August, 1970. In September, 1970, Reg McConkey was elected president and Lucy Maudsley was appointed treasurer ... the position vacated by Reg. "Following her marriage to Reg, the couple occupied the positions of president and treasurer until 1978 when they resigned and moved to Rockhampton to live at Talbot Estate," he said. "Following the death of her husband, Lucy still lives at Talbot Estate. She is a life member of Yeppoon Pensioners' League. "Two members who attended the 1964 meeting are still Yeppoon Pensioners League members ... Mesdames Poelitz and Warren." Following Reg McConkey's move to Rockhampton in 1978, Bill Shuttlewood was appointed president and is currently serving his 13th term in the office. Yeppoon League has a membership of 160. Current league officers: Stella Lubach (senior); Marge Cornell (junior); secretary, Lorna McIntyre; treasurer, Joe McIntyre; zone delegates, Kath Mcllwraith and Bill Shuttlewood. Compere, Marge Cornell; convenor, Rowena Stevens; ladies' committee, Sue Smith, Edna Cameron, Nancy Devantier, Wilma Stodart and Sylvia Cousins. "Yeppoon league member and Central Queensland artist Charles Alderdice must have had the league's beginnings in mind when he gave a painting to be raffled for league funds," Mr Shuttlewood said. "It is painted on black velvet and depicted is the band rotunda on Yeppoon's main beach where the first meeting of was held and where the present active body was formed. "Tickets for the painting are on sale from today for 20 cents each. The raffle will be drawn at the league's Christmas social in the Yeppoon Town Hall on Tuesday, December 10."

Bank manager retires to Yeppoon from inkwells to satellite dishes GRAHAM BASHAM walked out of the Commonwealth Bank on Wednesday night and ended a career than spanned almost 45 years and three States. He didn't look back; that's not his way. He has no regrets and he would be quite happy to do everything again without any changes. The 15-year-old boy who used to fill inkwells each day and wash them each week left the banking industry with a satellite dish shortly to link the Yeppoon bank with head office in Sydney. "I started in Adelaide in 1947 with the Savings Bank of South Australia which has amalgamated with the State Bank of S.A.," he said on Wednesday afternoon. "Part of my job involved changing the nibs in the pens and changing the blotters." He recalled customers using thick nibs with which they made thick downstrokes as part of their copperplate handwriting ... "but thinner nibs came into use because you could write faster with them". And "Biros" ... "They were all Biros in those days. You bought one and received free refills. Once they were established you had to buy the refills." It was obviously fun to look back. He remembered earning £104 ($208) a year and he left that bank for the Commonwealth Bank Ilerause the pay offered was £150 ($300) a year. But before joining the Commonwealth Bank he had an interesting time working at the Salisbury branch of the Savings Bank of South Australia. He lived 12 miles (about 17km) from the branch which was then in a town populated by "one man and a dog". "The first day, I set out on my bicycle to arrive about 8.45am. I didn't want to be late," he said. "I waited and waited, wondering what to do until about five minutes to 10 when a fat guy with a moustache and hat walked up the street and opened the door to the bank. I went in with him and we were open for business. We were gone each day by 3.30pm" During those five-and-a-half hours the young Graham Basham was 'assistant manager' ... because there were only two of them at the branch. "Today, the bank would be in a thriving city but back then, the building occupied only a tiny section of a huge block of land," he said. "The manager had gardens covering the whole lot. He spent all day in the garden. "When a customer came in to deposit 10 shillings or maybe a pound, I would have to go out into the yard and tell the manager he had a customer. "Under State law, I was not allowed to handle the money because I was under 21. I would tell the manager of the customer and he would sometimes continue gardening until he finished what he was doing. Then he would brush himself off, walk inside and wash his hands, then handle the customer's transaction." It was obviously a different way of life; when time was not so important When that manager went on holiday, he was replaced by one who allowed his 'assistant' to handle cash transactions ... and that freed him to spend the day in the pub! This week Graham Basham laughed at the recollections ... and made certain those memories were not confused with his time with the Commonwealth Bank! He joined the Commonwealth in 1949 at Adelaide and subsequently served at CSB Adelaide, Hobart and Launceston. In 1964, in Launceston, he received his first classified appointment as senior assistant, in the trading bank. Five months later he was moved within the branch to fill the position of assistant security clerk. In 1967 he was promoted to interviewing and investigating officer in the security department CTB Hobart. This was followed with a move to accountant in North Hobart

• CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 managerial ranks came in 1974 when you were selected as manager, New Norfolk, from where you advanced to lead the team at Ulverstone in 1978. "Your flair for these duties was again rewarded in 1985 with your promotion to manager, Yeppoon, and it is from this position that you have chosen to retire." Obviously, with the number of areas with which he was associated over his banking career, the decision on where to finally live could have been filled with a number of place names ... but he chose Yeppoon. He bought a house in Adelaide Street with a view over the beach, Keppel Bay, the islands and the harbour; and it has a verandah. The view, alone, would be enough for many people but the Basham family could have returned to Ulverstone, Tasmania, where they still have a home. So, with banking behind him, what does the future hold for the 60-year-old? "Golf is my game," he said. "Before I married I used to play golf off a handicap of 10 and now, with a 21, I'm looking forward to bringing that back to, say, 13. You have to have something to aim at" It seems like there will also be some travel ahead. He will resign as treasurer of the Yeppoon Swans next Tuesday because "I don't want football to interfere with a sudden decision to go to Hawaii or the Bahamas. But I will continue to be involved with the club". If a recent trip is any indication, he and wife Betty could see a lot of Australia in double-quick time. Until this trip he had never been north of Etna Creek. In two days, driving a Magna on his own, he went from Yeppoon to Townville (first night) and on to Cooktown (second day). He spent two more days coming home seeing Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour on the way. He drove each night until about 1 1pm. Trips to Southport, on the Gold Coast, will be part of the retirement agenda because his daughter, Kim, and her husband moved there after work was no longer available in the Wesley-Vale Pulp and Paper Mill. Kim was 19 when we left Tasmania for Yeppoon and she still says she's the little girl whose parents ran away from her. And that's another side to a banking career that immediately comes to mind. Kim attended seven different schools in seven years because of her father's appointments within the bank. Eventually, when 19, she stayed behind because of her fiancee while the family moved north. Nic Basham, who's 21, was not too happy about the move to Yeppoon because of his schooling but it turned out for the best "He had never played rugby before coming to Queensland but he wound up best and fairest in his first year and went on to become school captain," Graham Basham said.

i

"Now that I have retired I'llbe able to spend more time with him. He's living at home and works with the Commonwealth Bank in Rockhampton. "It's the second time around for him. He left th first job he had with the bank, decided maybe that wasn't the best decision, and grabbed the opportunity to return. "It will be good to sit and talk with him because

he's just realised how clever I've become."

Insurance changes and grows ... talk to Mike Walter & Associates MIKE Walter and Associates was formed in April, 1986 and comprised Mike Walter as principal with Bryan Munn as his associate. Since that time, Mike Walter and Associates has increased its client service to include office staff and another associate ... Jan Schmidt. Office procedures and insurance quotes have been stream-lined with the addition of hightech computer software. The office situated on the Yeppoon beachfront, upstairs in Seaview Arcade, is comfortably furnished, well located and offers plenty of car parking. Mike assists clients with their general insurance needs, but his specialty is life. "That covers many facets, like sickness and accident protection for self-employed business people, superannuation for everyone and, of course, life insurance," he said. Insurance should change and grow as people's needs change and grow and that is what is happening with Mike Walter and Associates. "Bryan Munn and his family are leaving the Capricorn Coast for family reasons. He specialised in general insurance as a multiagent with seven companies and we will miss his capable handling of clients' needs," Mike said. "He has been a part of our business and the Capricorn Coast for five years. Besides caring for his clients, Bryan spear-headed Yeppoon

Australian Football Club's premiership wins this year. "He played in the senior sides and then this year decided to use his expertise in coaching ... resulting in the first A grade premiership the club has had since its inception. "Bryan's departure doesn't mean our clients will suffer ... we have organised our systems to cover them with the same service as he gave them." Mike Walter and Associates offers general insurance from MLC, NZI, CIC Insurance, GRE Insurance, Mercantile Mutual, Sun Alliance and National Marine. Superannuation and life needs are covered by MLC. These choices mean clients are offered the best prices available without having to waste their time by 'shopping' around. "We do that 'shopping' for them. That is the reason we set up an office, so clients are able to see what insurance suits them, without being bothered by visitors or phone calls," Mike said. "Insurance is a professional business and we have continued that professional service by providing an office - overlooking the sea that offers privacy and confidentiality." Second grade loses game CAPRICORN Coast second grade cricket team finished its match against Easts at Rockhampton Cricket Grounds on Saturday... unfortunately losing on first innings in the second last over of the game. The match started with Easts being sent into bat on the first day. By stumps the opposition had reached a total of 8 for 297 after a poor day in the field for Capricorn Coast. All 11 players bowled in an effort to capture the East wickets. Those bowlers who took wickets were Steve Christie 3-56; Simon Baxter 1-41; Matt Williams 1-30: and Tony Ellison 3-19. East declared at the start of play on the second

day. That left Capricorn Coast with the task of batting all day. The situation required good batting as two batsmen were absent. Disaster struck at the start of the innings as the

top order batsmen collapsed. Fourwickets fell in the first 30 minutes leaving the score at 4 for 2 and only four wickets in hand. The recovery was started when captain Keith Semmler joined David Tolsher at the wicket. They took the score to 38 before David was out stumped on 18. Matt Williams was next to bat and was out for 7 as the score moved to 54. Dennis Hancock came to the wicket and a steady 32 run partnership ended when Keith was out after a well compiled 43 runs. Steve Christie walked onto the pitch as last batsman, with tea still ahead and the score at 86. A brilliant partnership followed which lasted well over two hours and was nearly a match saver as Steve was bowled in the last five minutes of the game with just an over left. Steve scored 72 runs in a very fine innings. Dennis remained not out on 58 after a three hour stay at the wicket. Their partnership amassed 129 runs and pushed the total to a creditable 219. It was unfortunate the Coast was two batsmen short. Tomorrow. Saturday. second grade starts the match against Brothers at Yeppoon Showground. With a more dedicated field and bowlina effort and a full lineup of batsmen. victory shouldpbe ahead.

DAYLIGHT SAVING dawned, as expected, bright and early on Sunday morning ... and two Coast residents enjoying a second honeymoon found themselves rushing around showering and shaving (the male, anyhow) and trying to pack in time to move out of the motel they were staying in before lOarn Because of the change of time during the night they had lost an hour and missed out on the expected relaxing doze with the Sunday papers scattered around the room. •• • BEING on a second honeymoon the last thing on their mind was changing the time on their watches. But because it was their 23rd wedding anniversary they were celebrating, they couldn't remember what they were supposed to be doing. They settled for a diet of TV, reading, sleeping, eating ... and then they remembered!!! Unfortunately, that was when they realised it was also 9.30arn! •• • THIS same couple had booked into a flash motel in a southern city late Friday night and had been amazed to find there were four packets of coffee, four teabags ... and only three bags of sugar holding just one teaspoon each. Both the wife and husband take three of those bags per cup so there wasn't much chance of a delicious cuppa before going to bed. OK, they could have phoned reception and ordered some ... but this flash joint had known for two weeks they were booking into that room. The management had plenty of time to organise a few lousy bags of sugar. The room had an out-ofdate TV guide, so little tourist literature that there wasn't even a brochure on the motel itself. The next morning the couple couldn't find the licensed restaurant because there were no directions in the iuv~n, the hallway, or the lift!!! •

Lk iVta USING the tracking skills learned in the scouts, our heroes figured out the location of the dining room and ordered up big. The continental breakfast (do Europeans really eat Coco Pops and Cornflakes?) was a serve-yourself affair. Almost every bowl was dirty! Reeks of dirt were baked onto the bowls. Finally, one was found that passed for clean. The rest of the breakfast was OK. They ate, they packed, they booked out. It cost $98 for the one night for two of them, including breakfast! • •

THAT day, free of the first motel, they sought a second. The wife went into the first, asked the price, returned to the car and they moved onto the next. This time it was the husband's turn. Then it was the wife's ... and so on. On the fifth attempt the husband asked an elderly gent how much a night would cost The gent, who appeared stooped with age, looked the husband up and down, looked out to the car, looked back at the husband, then said: "Are you two married?" The husband was staggered. The last time he'd been asked that question at a motel was back in the '60s ... and that time he hadn't been!! His wife, when she heard about the question, laughed so much it hurt. Then she decided it was probably a great compliment!!! • •

COMPLIMENT or not, they didn't stay there! •• • BACK home on the Coast, the husband

overheard a woman with a heavy accent (probably German) inquiring about accommodation prices. She was difficult, but not impossible to understand. She was told the price for the night and considered it deeply. Then she started to frame her next question. She asked if the room had a shower. It was a normal question. It seemed like the price was so cheap she doubted she was getting what she wanted. The bloke serving her, however, decided the question needed a bit of humour. "Hey, the room not only has a shower but we had electricity connected last week"!!! The woman, instead of laughing, obviously started translating the answer. She had a puzzled look as the key was passed over to her. Oh well, the husband thought it was funny! •• • WHEN you read a story inside about exCommonwealth Bank manager (how quickly you become 'ex') Graham Basham you will come across a part where he took a four-day trip to Cooktown and back. During the interview, asked if there had been any hassles, he said only with getting booked for speeding. The fine cost him $180 ... and he hadn't reached Marlborough when he copped it! •• • GRAHAM BASHAM will be replaced by acting manager Bruce Lawton until the new boss arrives. If you're not interested in getting a loan ask Bruce Lawton about his photographic skills. He asked Rhodes Watson if he would take a picture of Graham and the bank's staff (15) as a memento. He handed Rhodes the camera and stepped into the picture together with everyone else who had been pulled away from their closing down duties for the °erasion. The flash flashed, the camera whirred, everyone smiled ... and everyone went back to work. Then, and only then, Bruce Lawton discovered he did not have any film in his camera!!!

Coast cricketers crow after win CAPRICORN Coast A grade cricket crawled from under and crowed after downing Frenchville on Saturday afternoon. Chasing a score of 161. Frenci.,..—. reigning premiers.with a side full of Queensland Countryand North Queensland representative players. thought it would be a walk in the park. Things started to go Capricorn Coast's waywhen the second delivery of Ben Wright's over. cleaned bowled the batsman. Three balls later he claimed another wicket. Ben Wright's bowling figures were now 3 for 17. As the overs went one by one Ben Wright's figures changed from 3 for 17 to two overs later 4 for 21. then 5 for 38. 6 for 38 and 7 for 38. By the time he had completed his 17 over bowling spell he had claimed 7wickets for42 runs and had demolished the Frenchville side. One wicket he claimed with a outswinging yorker that left the batsman absolutely bewildered. In support Key Ogilvie was superb. bowling 21 tight overs for the figures of 3 for 49. Ogilvie's line.

and length was on line and he is getting back to the pace that makes him dangerous. The rest of the team played well in the field with Steve Pidcock taking two good catches and Brod Gough finishing with four catches behind the stumps. Brett Mot ton displayed good fielding prowess, cutting off shots that would surely have been boundaries and all this with stitches in a heavily bandaged left hand. In the end Frenchville were thoroughly thrashed being all dismissed for 103. With time on their hands Capricorn Coast batted for the second innings. With nothing to lose Capricorn Coast opened with in-form Ross Sheppard. as he blasted 123 runs off as many balls, including 7 sixex and 14 fours. With Andrew Martin 36. they put on a partnership of 120 runs. Capricorn Coast finished the day with 195 runs off 38 overs. Tomorrow the game is in Rockhampton and it will be an extremely difficult game against the hard Parkana side.
