Ambulance appeals to organisations and public for $6000 than 120,000km on the clock and is showing signs of its age. "It's not dangerous, but there would not be too many quick trips to the Rockhampton Base Hospital left in it," Mr Reynolds said. The need for a new ambulance first became apparent in January, 1982. A new vehicle appeal started in February, 1982, and, to date, slightly more than $4000 has been raised. "That's why we only need $6000," Mr Reynolds said. "We are subsidised dollar-fordollar by the State Government and, with the $4000 already raised plus the $4000 subsidy, we have $8000 in kitty for the $20,000 vehicle." Mr Reynolds said he hoped Coast service clubs and groups would support the new appeal. "The $4000 already raised came, in part, from many Coast service clubs and groups and individuals," he said.
YEPPOON and Emu Park District Ambulance needs $6000 to buy a new ambulance ... and it is calling on the Capricorn Coast to help it raise the money by June 30. In what will be a short, concentrated appeal, the Coast will be asked to do everything it can to provide the ambulance protection this area needs. Ambulance superintendent Geoff Reynolds said this week the Coast was long overdue for a new ambulance and it would cost $20,000. "That's the total cost because we are buying the basic model. We are not trying to buy the biggest ... we are aiming at replacing an eight-year-old vehicle with a new one," he said. The ambulance to be replaced has more
"Much of the total was given in 1982 but interest waned last year." Rather than have another long, drawn out appeal, Mr Reynolds has fixed June 30 as the closing date. If the money is raised by then, the ambulance can be ordered this financial year and be in operation by September. In an effort to involve the Coast in the appeal and to show its progress, Yeppoon signwriter Guy Day has made an "appeal thermometer" to show the rising total. It has been marked off in $1000 amounts starting at $4000 (already raised) and ending with the closing date for the appeal, June 30, and the target of $10,000. This will be erected in front of the Ambulance Centre in James Street and the amount raised each week will be painted in. Mr Reynolds said the group or individual raising the most money each week would be
asked to paint in the new weekly total. The Capricorn Coast Mirror will photograph each "painting-in" ceremony and will acknowledge all donations to the appeal. Mr Reynolds said everyone would be encouraged to help fund the new ambulance. "I am hoping each class in all the Coast schools will take up a collection or organise a fund-raising event to help us buy a new ambulance," he said. "New donor boxes have been left at all Coast hotels and we hope the hotels will get a competitive spirit going to see which hotel can provide the most each week. "Whatever happens, the appeal closes on June 30," Mr Reynolds said. All donations over $2 are tax deductable. Donation may be posted to the Ambulance Centre, P.O. Box 1, Yeppoon, 4703, or taken to the centre in James Street

AN $8.5 million shopping complex, which will include a huge supermarket/variety store, 20 speciality shops and seven professional offices, will be serving the Capricorn Coast by Christmas next year, one of the developers said this week. Doug Cuddy, of Cuddy and Bretz Pty Ltd, . said the shopping complex would be built at the "gateway to the Coast", the junction of the old Rockhampton-to-Yeppoon Road and the new road to Yeppoon, now under construction. The land is now owned by Fred Lawn. 'In an application for rezoning to Livingstone Shire Council, Mr Lawn said the land was now used for grazing purposes. Mr Cuddy said the shopping centre would have one major tenant; a supermarket-variety store. When pressed about whether a tenant had signed to operate from the complex, he said negotiations were under way.

He did not expect any problems in finding tenants for the 2U specialty stores ... 1 could sign up everybody in a fortnight," he said. The idea for a shopping centre of this size has been part of Cuddy and Bretz Pty Ltd planning for "two or three years" . Mr Cuddy said the centre would be the "best thing that has happened to the Coast".
"It will mean the 50 to 60 per cent of Coast residents who now shop in Rockhampton will keep their money in their own area," he said. "This complex will provide jobs for 100 people ... Coast people." The major tenant would be a big enough drawcard to bring people to the Coast ... particularly people from the mining centres to the West. "The mining community comes to the Coast on weekends to stay in their holiday homes but they shop in Rockhampton before

coming here," Mr Cuddy said. "The major tenant will be offering the prices they are looking for and they'll by-pass Rockhampton in favour of the Coast." Mr Cuddy said he also expected Rockhampton people would shop at the centre on a regular basis. "We've got all-day trading here on Saturdays and that will be the incentive," he said. "It will mean the Rockhampton family man won't have to rush his shopping on Saturday morning. He can combine shopping with a trip to the beach, and everyone on the Coast will benefit." Mr Cuddy said the complex was not being developed to "crucify James Street". "I'm involved in business on the Coast and have no intentions of getting out," he said. "This complex will provide more business for everyone." 0 Continued on page 5
